TYPEWRITER ATTACHMENT.
specification of Letters Patent Patented Sept. 21, 192.0.
Application filed May 13, 1918. Serial No. 234,163.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FnEDA L. DEDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Smith, in the county'of Sebastian and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriter Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in typewriter attachments and it is the principal object of the invention to provide a novel copy holder therefor capable of being easily and quickly attached to a typewriter without alteration thereto whereby to support various matter in positions convenient to an operator.
The improvements in the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the specilic description hereinafter contained, and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the same.
In'the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved copy holder showing the same applied to the carriage supporting bar of a typewriter,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse section through one of the adjustable brackets.
Having more particular reference to the drawings, in connection with which like reference characters will designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the improved holder includes angle arms 1, certain of the ends of which are extended laterally and off-set as at 2 to receive substantially U-shaped clamps 3 thereover, the ends of which are apertured and aline with corresponding openings formed in the lateral extensions of said arms whereby bolts 4L or similar fastening devices can be passed therethrough for an obvious purpose. It will be understood, that the off-set lateral extensions 2 are engaged with one of the carriage supporting bars of a typewriter while the U-shaped clamps are passed about the remaining portions thereof and serve to secure the angle arms in position against undue movement. The remaining ends of the angle arms are bent slightly upward as at 5 and receive thereon brackets, each including a strip 6, the lower ends of which are bent at substantially right angles as at 7 and connected to said upwardly bent ends by bolts 8 or other suitable fastening Vdevices; an adjusting bolt .9 passing through the upper ends of each ofthe strips 6 forv a purpose which will be vpresently apparent. Other strips 10 are provided and have their lower portions formed with elongated slots 11 while the upper ends thereof are bent upon themselves or hooked as at l2 and provided with screw threaded openings whereby set-screws 13 can be turned into engagement.. therewith. The strips 10 at their lower ends are formed with ears 15 which engage opposite side edges of the strips 6 to hold said strips 10 against sidewise movement when being adjusted.
It will of course be understood that my improved copy holder can be applied to various designs or makes of machines, such as conditions or preference may dictate; it being only necessary, in some instances to change the particular shape of the portions engaging the fixed or immovable parts of a typewriter whereby to afford an effectual support for the holder. However, as I have hereinbefore stated, I have shown this particular embodiment as applied to one of the ordinary carriage supporting bars 14 of a typewriter, which as will be understood is arranged adjacent the rear thereof.
In using the improved copy holder and assuming that the same is attached to the bar 111, the laterally extending portions of the angle arms 1 will serve'to arrange the brackets in position convenient to a user. At this time, the matter to be copied can be arranged on the bracket formed by the strips 6 and 10; displacement of the same being prevented due to the engagement of the lower portion thereof with the off-set ends 7 of the strips 6 and with the hooked ends forming clamps 12 of the strips 10, the set-screws 13 being turned into engagement with the adjacent portions of the matter to positively prevent undue movement. It is obvious, that the matter can be supported to permit the turning of the various pages thereof upwardly over the hooked ends 12 of the holder thus rendering the same quite desirable. f Further, the brackets can be adjusted to receive matter varying in size due to the engagement of the adjusting nut 9 in the elongated slots 11 formed in the lower portions of the strips 10.
Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my claim, l consider within the spirit of my invention. 9
I claim:
The combination with supporting brack ets adapted to be secured to one of the sup- A porting bars of a typewriter and having horizontal portions terminating with upturned angular free ends of a copy holder comprising stationary strips having lower right angular end portions secured to the angular ends of the bracket, the angular portions and ends constituting seats in the A holder for an article When engaged therein,
slotted strips, slidalole upon the stationary strips and having upper hook ends to clamp 'an article in the holder upon the seats, fasteners passed through the slots in the slid-V able strips, and ears on the lower ends of said slidable strips and engaging the edges of the stationary strips to prevent lateral shifting of said slidable strips relative to the stationary strips and set screws engaged in the hook ends on the slidalale strips.
In testimony whereof, I affix my .signature hereto.
