MATCH-BOX HOLDER. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 1908.
Application filed November 19, 1906. Serial No. 343,998.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. CHATARD, of Baltimore, Maryland, have invnted certain new and useful Improvements in Match- BoxHolders, of which the following is a specification.
The invention was devised particularly for the usual safety match boxes and its object is to enable the boxes to beheld in a convenient manner and place readily accessible in the dark and to accomplish this by a holder that may be very cheaply and economically manufactured and very easily used.
The drawings show several forms of my holder.
Figures 1, 2, and 3 are perspective view of the preferred form, longitudinal section thereof, and a view showing the manner of putting on and taking off from the box. Fig. 4 shows a modification. v
The box, consisting of cover I) and tray 0, is held in a partly open position and preferably suspended by a chain (1 having a ring f which may be slipped over the usual gas burner, allowing the holder and box to hang therefrom in convenient position for finding even in the dark.
In Figs. 1, 2, and'S the holder is of sheet material, as brass or nickel plate, and provides a back piece g having at the upper end ing the chain (1, and a bent or folded portion at j which clasps and holds the edge of the tray 0, as shown. The manner of putting the holder on is shown in Fig. 3. The lower end has a similar bent or folded clasp k which clasps the lower edge of the cover I), as seen. When this clasp is has been put in place and the cover drawn down into it, as in Figs. 1 and 2, the box is held'firmly and cannot open any further.- In this form of the device the back 9 lies outside the cover I). The central position of the ear H causes, as seen in Fig. 2, the box to hang in a straight or vertical position instead of tilting forward, as would occur if hung from any point in the plane of the bottom of the tray.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the back lies within the cover and has a rest formed by a bend m for one end of the tray, another bend and clasp j holding the upper end of the tray, and a bend or clasp g for the lower edge-of the cover.
It will be seen that all the forms shown inl clude a strip comprising a back-piece with the upper portion bent forward and then upwards and perforated to receive the hanger or chain (1. Also, that all the forms shown have clasps or stops limiting the downward opening movement of the box cover.
The holder presents a very finished and neat appearance owing to its construction, and avoids the necessity of tongues and projections punched out from the sheet metal and the unsightly appearance due thereto.
v There are other forms, of course, in which the invention may be embodied and I do not attempt to enumerate or develop thesej What I claim is:
1. In a holder for tray-and-cover match boxes, a bent strip comprising a back-piece having at its upper portion a'forward bend adapted to engage the upper end of the tray and limit itsupward motion, an upwardlybent portion projecting upwards from the end of the tray at substantiallythe center of the tray end for attachment to a means of suspension whereby the box will hang in a substantially straight and vertical position without other support and having a folded portion or bend for clasping the tray edge' and at its lower end having a bent-over clasp for embracing the lower edge of a partly opened cover, and an intermediate bent rest for the lower end of the tray.
2. In a holder for tray-and-cover match boxes, a bent strip comprising a back-piece bent at its upper end and having a perforated fold forming an ear and a folded por- .tion for clasping the tray edge when in use,- andbent at its lower end forming a clasp forthe edge of the box cover.
3. In a holder for tray-and-cover match boxes, a bent strip comprising a back-piece bent at its upper end and having a perforated fold forming an ear and a folded portion for clasping the tray edge when in use, and bent at its lower end forming a clasp for the edge of the box cover and having an intermediate bent portion forming a seat for the lower end of the tray.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscriblng witnesses.
WILLIAM M. CHATARD.
