IMPROVEMENT IN ROUND COMBS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may conce/m.'
Be it known that I, ORRIN B. GALLUP, of Summit, in the county of Kent, -and State of' Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Round Gombsg `and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andv exact description of the same, reference beingvhad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and in which- Fignres 1 and 2 represent `views of a round comb constructed according to my invention, taken at right angles to each other, and
Figures 3 and 4 represent diereut ways in which the comb may be applied.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to a novel construction of a round comb, with curved band and pivoted end-pieces, whereby the comb is rendered more convenient of adjustment to the head, and vwhereby the necessarily high cost of tortoise-shell round combs, as constructed of one piece, may be reduced, and a better and more convenient adjustment on the head be secured.
Referring to the accompanying drawings- A is a curved band, constructed, prefelably, of tortoise-shell, but may be constructed of any material of which round combs are made.
This curved band is, or may be, made without teeth, ,n thereby not only preventing unnecessary injury to the hair, by the splitting and wearing-action of teeth at a locality where they are not particularly needed, but also cheapeniug the comb, by lessening the cost of its material and of its construction.
B B are end-pieces or side-combs, attached to the extremities of said curved band by rivets, or otherwise, so` that a cheaper comb is produced, by obviating the necessity of using a continuous piece of tortoiseshell in its construction, and so that, when the comb is applied to the hair, the said end-pieces, by taking eiiect in the hair on the sides of the head, retain the comb in position, while the curved band serves tb hold back the hair on the central and upper portions of the head, as represented in g. 3.
Said end-pieces B, instead of being rigidly attached to the curved band A, are pivoted thereto, so as to be susceptible of application in different Ways, as represented in iig. 4.
What I-claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The band A, havingcombs B, pivoted at each end, forming an adjustable round comb, substantially as described.
ORRIN B. GALLU'P.
