Description
PATENTED JUNE 16, 1908.
D. W. BARTRAN.
SHOULDER PAD. APPLICATION FILED H1126, 190a.
' fiaz/jd zmzim DAVID W. BARTRAN, OF CARSON, LOUISIANA.
SHOULDER-PAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 16, 1908.
Application filed February 26, 1908: Serial No. 417,871.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAvm'W. BARTRAN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Carson, parish of Calcasieu, Louisiana, ave invented a certain new and useful Im rovement in Shoulder-Pads, of which the ollowing is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompan ing drawings, forming part of this speci cation, in Which' Figure 1' is a front elevation of a portion of a persons body showing my improved shoulder pads in operative position, one of the pads being shown in section; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the pads.
This invention relates to pads such as are placed underneath a garment for the urpose of building out the garment and t us improving the appearance, of the person wearing same.
It has heretofore been the-practice to insert layers of waddin or padding in the shoulders of a coat at the time the coat was being made so as to build out the garment and thus produce a broad shoulder effect.
The object of my invention is to provide a pair of shoulder pads that are not connected to or embodied in a coat but which are adapted to be worn underneath the outer shirt or shirt-waist of a person.
One advantage of my pads is that they will give a erson a broad shoulder effect even when t 1e persons coat is removed.
Another advantage is that the shoulders of the person wearing the pads will always look the same no matter what articular coat he may have on. And stil another advantage is that they reduce the cost of manufacturing coats for they overcome the necessity of placing padding in coats at' the time they are made.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention, A designates a pair of shoulder ads which are joined together preferably by means of an elastic strap 1 that passes across the back of the person wearin the pads and an elastic front strap 2 whici passes over the chest of said person, the front strap being provided with a buckle 2*. sists of several layers of padding or wadding that are carried by a sleeve portion 3 and a shoulder portion 4 which are connected together by one or more rows of stitches that also )ass through the layers of padding, said shoulder and sleeve portion being formed of any suitable kind of cloth or pliable material.
The padding consists of a number of thin layers 5 of material of gradually increasing dimensions la )ped one u on the other and cut to follow t e lines of t 1e shoulder so that a gradual broadening effect is produced. The pads are adapted to be worn underneath the outer shirt or shirt-waist of a that they give a broad shoulder e 'ect even when the )ersons coat is removed. They, of course, uild out the shoulders of a persons coat and thus im art to the coat a finished and well-tailorer ap )earance. The pads also change the natura contour of the outer points of the shoulders of the person wearing the pads and as they are not subjected to the weight of the sleeves or body of the wearers coat they will not be drawn or forced out of shape. Consequently they prevent a coat from breaking or crushing down at the shoulders. The pads do not shift or slip out of place because they are held in position by the elastic bands 1 and 2 which permit free movement of the arms and shoulders of the person wearin the pads.
Having thus descri ed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a pair of shoulder pads adapted to be worn underneath the outer shirt or shirt-waist of a person and each consisting of a tubular-shaped sleeve portion and shoulder portion which carry several layers of padding, and members adapted to pass across the back and chest of the person wearing the pads for connecting said pads together; substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a shoulder pad adapted to be worn underneath an outer shirt or shirt-waist and consisting of several layers of padding of gradually increasing dimensions lapped onc upon the other and out to follow the lines of a persons Each shoulder pad conshoulder, va tubular-shaped sleeve ortion In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my and shoulder ortion connected toget ier and signature in t 16 presence of two witnesses, joined to said layers of padding, and elastic this 21st day of February 1908.
members connecting said pads together and DAVID W. BARTRAN adapted to pass across the back and chest of Witnesses: the person Wearing the pads; snbstantially GEORGE LAIRD,
as described. FREDERICK W. DORTCH.
