To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANNA G. MILLER, a citizeness of the United States, residing at Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Hooks and Eyes; and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of'the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to improvements in hooks and eyes. i j

The object of the invention is to improve the construction of the hook and eye shown and described in the U. S. Patent, No. 814,556, granted to me March 6, 1906, and to provide means to more securely hold the 00k and eye together.

With the above and other objects in view,

the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view showing the im roved construction of the hook and eye; ig. 2is an edge view of the same; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the hook; and Fig. 4 is a similar view of the'eye.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the hook member of the fastener and 2 designatesthe eye member of the same. 1

' The -hook member 1 is formed of a single piece of wire bent to form longitudinally disposed side bars 3 and a centrally disposed ill 4 which projects between, the sidebars 2 and lies in the same plane therewith, the side bars being connected to the bill by transversely curved junctures as shown. The side-bars 3 are bent inwardly adjacent to the rear end of the bill 4 to form detents 5 forward portion of the side bars 3 between which the bill 4 lies is bent downwardly or offset from the rear portion of the hook member, as shown at 6. The rear ends of the side bars 3 are bent upon themselves to form fastening forms which are adapted to be engaged with the cloth of the garment to which the hook is attached and after being engaged therewith are clenched, thus securely holding the hook in place without sewing or otherwise fastening the same; The clenched ends of the hook may be covered by suitable folds in the material forming the garment.

The rear end of the bill 4 is bent to form a flat, substantially circular enlargement 8 which together with the inwardly bent detent portion 5 of the side bars 3 forms a detent by means of which a casual disengagement of the eye from the book will be prevented.

The eye member 2 of the fastener consists of a single piece of wire bent upon itself to form a loop, presenting a forward end bar, 9, adapted for engagement with the bill of the hook, the said portions of the eye being first bent upwardly immediately in rear of the bar 9 to form recesses 9 and thence downwardly to form ofiset bearing portions or shoulders, 10. When the eye is engaged with the hook, the ends of the latter seat in the recesses 9 'and the bearing portions or shoulders 10 engage in rear of the ends of the hook, thereby preventing the accidental disengagement of the hook from the eye.

The upwardly bent portion of the eye as shown at 9 forms a locking recess into which the forward ends or junctures of the bill portion of the hook are adapted to be seated when the hook and eye are engaged, thus forming together with the shoulders 10 detent portions of the billand side bars of the hook member a double lock whereby the hook and eye will be positively prevented from becoming loose or disengaged. The downwardly bent forward end 9 of the eye greatly facilitates the engagement of the same with the bill of the hook. The rear ends of the eye member 2 are bent upon themselves to form attaching prongs 12 by means of which the eyeis secured to the garment in thesame manner as described in connection gith the fastening prongs on the hook mem- It will be noticed that the bar 9 firmly en gages the bill 4 when the curved ends at the juncture of the side members 3 and the M114 scat snugly in the recesses 9, and when the hook and eye members are in substantial alinement. Such an arrangement is provided to prevent the joining ends of said hook and eye members from moving in the direction which is upward onFig. 1, as such a movement would cause the members to buckle.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be. readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in. the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle orsaorifieing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined by theapponded claims.
