UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOOK AND EYE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented March 6, 1906.
Application filedDecemlier '7, 1905. Serial No. 290,779.
To all whom it'may concern:
Be it known that I, ANNA G. MILLER, acitizen of the United States, residing at Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State .of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hooks and Eyes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in hooks and eyes.
The object of the invention is to provide fasteners of this character which may-be quickly and easily connected and which when coupled together will not be casually unfastened.
A further object is to provide a hook-andeye fastening having means whereby .the parts of the same are secured to a garment without the use of a needle and thread, the fastening means being so arranged as to beinvisible.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view, on an enlarged scale, of a hook and eye constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig 2 is an edge view showing the manner of fastening the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a hook disconnected from the eye and detached from the cloth, and Fig. 4 is a similar view of the eye.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the hook member of a fastening, and 2 denotes the eye member of the same.
The hook member 1 is formed of a single strip of wire bent to form side bars 3 and a bill portion 4, which projects between the side bars 2 and lies in the same plane therewith. The side bars 3 are bent inwardly adj acent to the inner end of the bill 4 to form detents 5, which when the eye is engaged with the hook to prevent the casual disengagement thereof. The portion of the side bars 3 having the bill 4 is bent downwardly or offset from the rest of the side bars, as
shown at 6. The inner ends of the side bars 3 are bent upon themselves to form prongs 7, which are adapted to be engaged with the cloth of the garment to which the hook is attached and after being engaged therewith are clenched, thus securely holding the hook in place on the cloth. After thus securing the hook the material forming the garment may be arranged in plaits or folds to hide the inner end of the side bars 3 and the fastening devices 7.
The eye member 2 of the fastening consists of a single strip of wire bent upon itself to form a loop, the folded or looped end of which is bent downwardly, forming a bill-engaging portion 9, which is adapted to be engaged with the ends of the bill and drawn up into the space between the bill and side bars 3, thus securely connecting the hook and eye. The downwardly-bent loop portion of the eye greatly facilitates the engagement of the eye with the bill of the hook member and permits said bill to lie flat or to be formed in the same plane with the side bars 3, thus improving the construction of the hook and enabling the garment to be pressed without interfering with the hooks thereon. The inner ends of the eye member 2 are bent upon themselves to form attaching-prongs 10, by means of which said eye is secured to the garment, the arrangement of the prong connection of the eye member being the same as that employed in connection with the hook memben.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the prin ciple or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined by the appended claim. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
A fastening device of the character described comprising a hook having attaching members, prongs formed on the ends of said members, a flat, offset eye-receiving portion,
a centrallydisposed bill formed in said pol In testimony whereof I have hereunto set tion and lying in the same plane therewith, a my hand in presence of two subscribing Witloop-shaped eye, attachin -pr0ngs' formed nesses.
on said eye, means to facilltate the engage ANNA G. MILLER. 5 ment of the eye with the hook, and means to Witnesses:
prevent the casual separation of said hook RUTH THOMPSON,
and eye, substantially as described. S. A. GRITZNER.
