HOOK AND Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented sept. 15, 1908.
Application led November 29, 1907. Serial No. 404,458.
Y T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLMOT G. HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San F rancisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hooks and Eyes, of which the Afollowing'is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in garment fasteners, and the object of the invention is to rovide a. simple and eflicient device of this c I aracter comprising a. substantial hook and eye so constructed as to be. readily and quickly adjusted upon each other, and providing means whereby accidental displacement of the members is entirely obviated.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction of garment fasteners hereinafter Yfully described and claimed.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved garment fastener showing the lmembersin engaged position. Fig. 2 is a plan view Of the hook member. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the eye member. F ig. 4 is a side elevation of the hook member. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the eye member, and Fig.-
6 is a side elevation of the hook and eye member in engaged position.
As shown in the drawing my improved garment fastener comprises a pair of separate members, constituting a hook member A and an eye member B, both constructed of a sin-- gie strand of resilient metal.
The hook member A comprises a retaining finger 1 constituting a substantial tongue, bent as at 2 to provide the forwardly extending body members 3, underlying t-he tongue 1 and bent upwardly and inwardly to provide retaining fingers 4 of a height approximately equaling that of the tongue 1. The strand .of Inetal is then bent outwardly and downwardly as at 5 l'and thence continued rearwardly in a parallel line with the body 3, terminating in the attaching eyes 6, by which the member 1s adapted't-o be secured upon a. garment.
The eye member .B constitutes an elon- I gated mouth 7, which is bent inwardly as at 8 and thence continued rearwardly as at 8 to form the body of the eye, which terminates in the attaching eyes 9, by which this member is secured u )on a garment.
In securing t 1e two Inembers upon each other, the eye member B has its elongated Inouth inserted under the tongue 1 of the 100k member and the strands constituting the body portion of the eye B forced together and under the retaining fingers 4 of thcbhook,
thus effectively securing the two members together and entirely obviating the liability of accidental displacement or separation of -the hook or eye. y
When it is desired to se )arate the members the body portion 8 of tlie eye member is forced upwardly out of enga-gement with the retaining lingers ofthe hook Incmber, and the two elements readily withdrawn from each other.
IVhile I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention minor details may be resorted lto without departing from or sacrificing any of its advantages, within the scope of tic appended claim.
I-lavinur thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
A garment fastener comprising' a hook member constructed ofa strand of wire having attaching eyes, upwardly bent members provided with inwardly extendinT portions and a tongue extending towards the inward portions, and an eye constructed of a strand of resilient material having an elongated mouth and spaced body members provided with attaching eyes, the mouth of the e 7e member adapted for engagement beneath t e tongue of the hook member and the body members of. the eye adapted to engage the upturned portions of the hook and to lie beneath the inturned portions thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses. WILLMOT G. W'itnesses:
CHARLES F. OCALLAGIIAN, Jos. B. DUGGAN.
