No. 889,416. PATENTBD JUNE 2, 1908.

SPRING DIVIDERS AND CAMPER-8.. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 21, 19oa.'

NT @FFICE.
ANDREW F. VOSS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
SPRING DIVIDERS AND CALIPERS.
Application filed February 21, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW F. Voss, a citizen of Germany, residingin the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spring Dividers and Calipers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to dividers and calipers, and pertains especially to a tool of this sort in which the caliper or divider legs are opened automatically, by means of a spring, and are closed by means operating in opposition to this spring.
The object of the invention is to provide a well-made, quick adjusting, simple and practical divider and caliper.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a pair of dividers opened out for use. Fig. 2 is a view of the same, closed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view representing the invention. Fig. 4 shows the invention applied to outside calipers. Fig. 5 is a view of inside calipers having my improvement.
A represents the caliper or divider legs pivoted together at 1, and held normally open by a segmental spring 2. Below the fulcrum 1 of the legs A is a pair of toggle members 3 pivoted to the legs at 4, and to each other at 1. A rod 5 connects pivotally to the inner ends of the toggle members 3, and extends up through the pivot 1 and spring 2, and has a milled head 5 by which the device may be turned when it is desired to describe an are or a circle. The upper end of the rod 5 is threaded to receive an adjusting or follower nut 6, which latter seats on the upper concaved end of a sleeve 7, which latter screws into or is otherwise fixed to one of the pivotal members 1. The rod 5 does not turn, and is free to slide through the sleeve 7.
The tendency of the curved spring 2 is always to press the legs apart, and the object of the rod 5, sleeve 7, and threaded nut 6 is to close the legs more or less against the operation of the spring 2. Thus, when the fol- Specifieation of Letters Patent.

lower nut6 is screwed down on the rod, it draws the toggle members 3 upward between the legs, and closes the latter more or less. Contrariwise, by loosening up on the nut 6, the toggle members are allowed to straighten until they assume the position shown in Figs. 1 or 3, whereupon the divider legs or caliper legs are opened out to their greatest extent.
By the construction herein shown and described, it will be manifest that there are no side constructions or projections of any sort to interfere with the operation of the tool; thereby fulfilling all the objects of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, wha I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a tool of the character described, the combination of a pair of legs pivoted to gether, toggle members connecting the legs, means normally tending to open the legs, and means passing through the pivot and connecting with the toggle members to close the le s.
2. In a tool of the character described, the combination of a pair of legs pivoted together, means tending normally to open the legs, and means including a pair of toggle members connected with the legs, operative to close the legs.
3. In a tool of the character described, the combination of a pair of legs pivoted together, a toggle having its members connected with the legs, a rod' connected with the connected ends of the toggle members and passing through the pivot of the legs, said rod having a threaded portion, a nut on said threaded portion, a fixed abutment with which said nut cooperates to bend the toggle members, and means operative on the legs to hold them normally open.
4. In a tool of the character described, the combination of a pair of legs pivoted together, toggle members connected to the legs, a spring to open the legs, and means connected with the toggle members to close the legs.
5. In a tool of the character described, the combination of a pair of legs pivoted to gether, toggle members connected to the legs, a spring to open the legs, and means 1 In testimony whereof I have hereunto set connected W1th the toggle members to close my hand 1n presence of two subsorlblng W11;- the legs, said last-named means lncluchng a nesses.
rod passing through the pivot of the legs and ANDREl/V F. YOSS. 5 through the spring, a fixed sleeve surroundl/Vitnesses:
