Description
J. H. MONTGOMERY. AUTOMATIC WRENCH.
No. 500,025. Patented June 20, 1893.
IIIIlllllIIIHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIPII l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. MONTGOMERY, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
AUTOMATIC WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,025, dated June 20, 1893.
Application filed January 16, 1898. Serial No.458,673. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. MONTGOMERY, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Automatic Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches, more particularly to pipe wrenches, of the self adjusting type. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view. Fig. 2 is a back view and Fig. 3 is a cross section through the center longitudinally.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views.
The wrench is constructed with a body-bar A, the upper end of which is formed into a curved jaw and toothed to better grip the pipe; the lower end projects beyond the handleproper. Near the curved jaw of the bodyhar is hinged the angular or hooked jaw B. I prefer to form this jaw of one piece of metal bent to proper shape, the two ends forming the ears on each side of the body bar and held by the rivet I upon the body-bar is the sliding hollow handle G, to the upper end of which is hinged the link D, which is also hinged to the jaw B, the sliding handle when moved up or down on the bodybar will cause the jaws to open and close; inside the handle is fastened the spring stop E, against which rests the spiral spring F, which is held in place around the bodybar by the washer G and nut H; the spring is for the purpose of closing the jaws of the wrench when opened, the nut and washer forming an extended part of the handle. By pressing the extended part of the handle into the hollow handle O the jaws will be forced open by the mechanism before described, and when placed around the pipe and the pressure released the spiral spring will automatically close the jaws around the pipe.
Having described myinvention andits operation, what I claim as newand novel, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the body-bar A, its upper end forming one of the jaws of a wrench; the jaw B hinged to the body-bar; the sliding handle C upon the body-bar; the link D hinged to the jaw B and handle 0; the spring stop E; the spiral spring F inside the handle O and around the bodybar; the washer G, and nut H, all as described and setiforth.
2.-The combination of a body-bar A its upper end forming one of the jaws of a wrench to which is hinged an auxiliary jaw B formed of one piece of metal folded in the center and bent to proper shape; a hollow hahdle O sliding upon the body-bar; the link D hinged to the jaw B and handle O; the spring stop the spiral spring F placed inside the hollow handle and around the body-bar, and means for holding the spring in place on the body-bar; all as described and set forth.
3. In a wrench the body-bar having a curved toothed jaw formed at its upper end; the lower end of the body-bar extending below a hollow handle and adapted to telescope into it, an auxiliary jaw hinged to the body-bar adapted to be closed by the sliding of the handle upon the body-bar, in combination with a spiral spring inclosed in the hollow handle, which closes the jaws of the wrench when opened.
4. In a wrench the body-bar having acurved toothed jaw formed at its upper end, a hinged auxiliary jaw, a link connecting the auxiliary jaw to a hollow handle sliding upon the bodybar; a spring stop E attached to the in side of the hollow handle; the washer G and not H, in combination with a spiral spring for closing the jaws of a wrench when opened.
JAMES H. MONTGOMERY.
