Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 27, 1912. Serial No. 722,852.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. OWEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schindler, in the county of Lincoln and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in W renches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates broadly to the class of wrenches and more specifically to that class of wrenches wherein means are provided for operating the jaws thereof so as to enable them to be moved into engagement with structures of great diameter which may be used in connection with devices of comparatively smaller diameter when occasion requires.
With the above and other objects in view my invention relates to such details of constructionand in the arrangement and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention showing the handle in a closed position in full line and in an open position in dotted line and also illustrating the movement of the pivoted jaw in dotted line. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of my inventicn showing the handle as in a closed position.
In the accompanying drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention the numeral 10 designates a body portion or handle of my device which has provided thereon and at one end thereof an extension 11 the latter having a portion 12 formed intermediate its ends and a con stricted portion 13 at its forward end the said constricted portion terminating into a jaw 1%. As is usually the case a jaw is provided upon its forward face with corrugation 15 whereby a more secure grip may be had upon the structure engaged.
The handle above referred to has a pair of diametrically opposite ofiset portions 15 provided thereon and a longitudinally extending recess 16 provided therein between said offset portions, said offset portions serving to reinforce the edges of said handle at the recess and preventing the same from becoming broken. A nurled nut 17 is provided with an eXteriorly located mill manipulated surface, said surface being provided and disposed within oppositely disposed notches 18 in the extension 11 the notches being within the offset portion 1 as is clearly shown. Another longitudinal openmg is provided in the extension and communicates with the recess 16, said opening and said recess having an eXtei-iorly screw threaded rod 20 located therein said rod eX tending through said wheel 17 and having an enlargement 21 provided at its forward end for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
A pin 22 is journaled through the enlargement 21 on the rod 20 and has connection with ears 23 which are formed upon and integral with a lever 24, the said cars extending substantially at a right angle from said lever whereby the latter will be hereinafter termed a bell-crank lever.
It is apparent that by the rotation of the wheel 17 the rod will be adjusted whereby the pivoted pin of the lever will also be moved.
A band 25 is provided about the constricted portion 13 of the extension 11, a band being comparatively larger than the constructed portion to rest the shank 26, of a jaw 27 the latter being adjacent the jaw 1a: and provided upon its inner face with the serrations 28 for the purpose obvious. The rear end of the shank 26 in pivotal engagement with the bell crank lever 52% is shown at 29 whereby when the lever is located upon its pivot as shown at Fig. 1 the pivot will be removed in relation to the stationary jaw. It is now apparent that by a rotation of the nurled nut 17 when the lever is in the position shown at Fig. 1 the pivoted jaw will be removed in relation to the stationary jaw to a certain distance however, when the operation of the lever occurs it will be moved still farther and when the lever is pressed back into position it will securely grip the structural engagement.
It is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of my device will be fully appreciated.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts, provided such changes fall within the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A wrench comprising a shank having one end thereof reduced, a rigid jaw formed on the reduced end, the opposite end of said shank constituting a handle, said shank provided at the intermediate portion thereof with a longitudinal slot, said shank further provided at the handle end thereof with a longitudinally extending recess communicating with the slot, a screw threaded rod disposed in the slot and'recess, said recess preventing transverse movement of said rod, the sides of the slot being provided with oppositely disposed notches, a knurled nut mounted on the rod and operating in the notches, a band disposed about the reduced end of said shank, a jaw slidably mounted ,in said band and cooperating with the rigid jaw, the shank of the sliding jaw terminating at a point approximately intermediate the ends of the shank of the rigid jaw, a bell crank lever having the outer end thereof pivoted to the outer end of the rod, the inner end of the shank of the sliding jaw being pivoted to said bell crank lever at the point of distortion, said sliding jaw being adjusted at the operation of said nut, said bell crank lever being formed from a single piece of metal and bent into a sub-v stantially U-shaped configuration, and the lower end of the lever engageable upon the sides of the handle end of the shank for preventing transverse movement of said rod.
