Be it known that I, THOMAS J. MoKAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Trunks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to trunks and has for its object the provision of means whereby the contents of the trunk may be raised to a position above the main body portion of the trunk into a convenient position for packing and unpacking.

To this end my improved trunk comprises a main exterior body portion provided with one or more lids and an interior receptacle fitted to the interior of said main body portion and telescoping thereinto, which interior receptacle may, if desired, be provided with one or more trays, and new and improved means for operatively connecting said lid. or. lids and interior receptacle whereby when said lid or lids are open said receptacle will be elevated.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one construction in which vmy invention may be embodied, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the trunk with the lids raised, and the interior receptacle elevated. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view with the lids and receptacle lowered. Fig. 3 is a central transverse sectional view of the exterior body portion with the lid raised. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of one of the spring catches hereinafter mentioned.

The main exterior body portion 12 is preferably provided with a pair of half lids or covers 13 one of which is hinged to each end of said body portion. Adapted to telescope into the body 12 is an interior receptacle 14, said receptacle having exterior dimensions substantially the same, or slightly smaller, than the interior dimensions of the body 12, and being preferably provided with a tray or trays 15. The receptacle 14 is preferably provided with rollers 16 at either end to facilitate the raising and lowering of said receptacle in the body portion and to guide the same in its rising and falling movements.

The means herein provided for elevating the interior receptacle 14 when the lids 13 are raised comprise a pair of swinging frames or levers 17, suitably hinged or pivoted at their bottoms at either end of the interior of the body portion 12, asshown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and in full lines in Figs. 2 and 3. Said frames are preferably provided with rollers 18 to bear against the bottom of the interior receptacle 14, and are connected by suitable connectors 19 with the lids 13. The frames 17 in turning about their pivots, react or thrust in opposite directions against the bottom of the body portion and the bottom of the interior receptacle, thereby forcing said members apart and the interior receptacle upwardly. Preferably and as herein shown said connectors 19 each comprise a plurality of jointed bars or slats, preferably three in number, adapted to fold upon one another to a greater or less extent when the lids 13 are closed, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, to provide a certain amount of lost motion between the lids 13 and frames 17. As will now be seen, opening of the lids 13 will cause an upward swinging movement of the frames 17 and a consequent elevation of the interior receptacle 14, the construction of the connectors 19 above described permitting the lids 13 to open part way before the interior receptacle starts to rise, thereby preventing any binding between this receptacle and the lids.

Means are preferably provided for supporting the interior receptacle in its elevated position independently of the frames 17 said means as herein shown comprising a spring catch or catches 20, provided on the interior of the exterior body portion-12, and operatively connected to suitable operating devices 21 provided on theexterior of said body portion, whereby said catches may be withdrawn to permit said interior receptacle to be depressed and the lids closed.

While I, in order that my invention may be readily understood, have shown and described the same as embodied in a particular construction, I wish it to be distinctly understood that I do not limit myself to the pre cise construction shown, it being obvious that many changes might be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In a trunk, the combination with an exterior body portion provided with a lid or cover, of an interior receptacle within said body portion, means interposed between the bottom of said body portion and the bottom of said receptacle and adapted to react or thrust against both of said members for forcing said body portion and receptacle apart, and a connector interposed between said means and said lid or cover.

2. In a trunk, the combination with an exterior body portion provided with a lid or cover, of an interior receptacle within said body portion, means interposed between the bottom of said body portion and the bottom of said receptacle for forcing said body portion and receptacle apart, said means comprising a lever pivoted to one of said members and having a sliding engagement with the other of said members, and means for operatively connecting said lever with said lid or cover.

3. In a trunk, the combination with an eX- terior body portion provided with a lid or cover, of an interior receptacle within said body portion, and means for operatively connecting said interior receptac e and said lid, said means including a frame hinged within said body portion and having a sliding engagement with the bottom of said receptacle.

4. In a trunk, the combination with an exterior body portion provided with a lid or cover, of an interior receptacle within said body portion, means for operatively connecting sald interior receptacle and said lid, said means including a frame hinged within said body portion andengaging the bottom of said receptacle, and a roller interposed between said frame and said receptacle.

5. In a trunk, the combination with an exterior body portion provided with a lid or cover, of an interior receptacle having exterior dimensions substantially corresponding to the interior dimensions of said body portion, and means for operatively connecting said interior receptacle and said lid, said means including a frame hinged within said body portion and engaging the bottom of said receptacle.

6. In a trunk, the combination with an eX- terior body portion provided with a pair of half lids, of an interior receptacle within said body portion, a pair of swinging frames hinged to the interior of said body portion at the ends thereof and adapted to engage the bottom of said interior receptacle, and connectors interposed between said swinging frames and said half lids.

7. In a trunk, the combination with an exterior body portion provided with a pair of half lids, of an interior-receptacle within said body portion, a pair of swinging frames hinged to the interior of said body portion at the ends thereof and adapted to engage the bottom of said interior receptacle, rollers interposed between said swinging frames and said interior receptacle, and connectors interposed between said swinging frames and said half lids.

8. In a trunk, the combination with an eX- terior body portion provided with a pair of half lids, of an interior receptacle within said body portion, a pair of swinging frames hinged to the interior of said body portion at the ends thereof and adapted to engage the bottom of said interior receptacle, and connectors interposed between said swinging frames and said half lids, said connectors each comprising a plurality of jointed bars or slats.
