BANANA-SHIPPING CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 694,998, dated March 1.1, 1902.

Be it known that I, FRANK SCHMITZ, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Banana-Shippin g Cases, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain improvements in banana-shipping cases of the class in which a suspended sack is supported in a crate or other framework, out of contact therewith, in such a manner as to protect the fruit from damage by bruising or otherwise. Banana-cases of this sort, while of comparatively recent date, have yet come into very extended use and have up to the present time, so far as I know, been so constructed as to be adapted to only one bunch of bananas, it-being impossible to put in a second bunch without causing them to rest upon and injure the first.

It is the object of my invention to provide a shipping-caseof this sort 'which will be adapted to receive either one large bunch or two small ones and to support the two bunches separately, the upper one being supported by means of an inner bag in substantially the same manner as a single bunch hasbeen supported heretofore.

To such end the invention consists in certain novel characteristics which will be described and defined below.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical diametrical section of a "banana-case, showing my improvements. Fig. 2 is a similar section of the same case differently arranged. Fig. 3 is a similar section of a modification, and Fig. 4 is another similar section of the same modification prepared for tlie'reception of the upper bunch of bananas.

In these drawings, A is an outer protectin g-case,which is preferably an open crate consisting of vertical slats a and circular hoops a, said crate being shown in all of the figures of the drawings.

In Fig. 1, B is an open-ended outer sack hung within the crate-by means of cords b and preferably extending beyond the crate at the top, so that it may be tied even with the top thereof. Within this outer sack is a second sack B, also open at both ends and secured to the crate, but having no fastening thereto below approximately the middle portion.

In the use of this crate the outer sack is tied at the bottom, as seen at Fig. 2. A bunch of bananas is then inserted, and if the same is sufficiently short the inner sack is drawn upward and tied near its middle portion, as is also shown in Fig. 2, making a second bag within the first and about half as long. A second bunch of bananas can be placed in the upper bagand the bag tied above them, as seen at the 'top of the figure.

Fig. 3 illustrates a modification in which the inner sack extends only part way down inside of the outer sack. The outer sack is lettered B? and is here shown as closed at the bottom. The inner sack is lettered B and extends past the middle of the outer sack, so that when tied, as seen in Fig. 4.,the capacity of the two compartments will be approximately equal. This proportion may of course be varied, if desired, to suit any requirements that may be met.

The invention is independent of the particular construction, and is therefore not limited thereto.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a banana-shipping case, the combi nation with a surrounding, protecting-case, of a bag suspended therein, an open-bottom inner bag suspended within the first and free therefrom part way up from the bottom, and means for closing up said inner bag between the ends of the outer bag to form two separate compartments whereby a bunch of bananas may be supported in each of said com partments; substantially as described.

2. In a bananashipping case, the combination with an outer protecting-case, of a bag hung within the same and out of contact therewith, an inner open-bottom shorter bag hung within the first, and means for tying the open bottom end of said inner bag to form two compartments, whereby the bunch of bananas may be supported in each of said cornpart ments; substantially as described.
