Description

No. 886,218. PATENTBD APR. 28. 1908. H. -E. JOLLY. JAR GLOSURE.
ABPLIOATION FILED JUNE 2B. 1907.
1 y' uw .attoznus UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOWARD E. JOLLY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
JAR-cnosunn.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD E. JOLLY, citizen Of the United States, residing at CO- lumbus, in the county Of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar-Closures, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improved means for closing the mouths of bottles, jars and the like, and aims tO provide a novel construction whereby an air tight seal may be easily and quickly produced.
The Object of the invention is tO accomplish this result by means Of a simple and inexpensive construction embodying a cover which can be readily removed from the jar or applied thereto, without the necessity Of manipulating any detachable fastening members.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also tO acquire a knowledge of the details of construction Of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view through the upper portion of the jar showing the invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a top plan view Of the jar and, Fig. 3 is a detail view of the cover.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the body portion of a jar of any approved construction and 2 the neck thereof. T he inner walls of the said neck are preferably flared outwardly at the base thereof, as indicated a't 3, and in the preferred embodiment of the invention, the lower portion of the neck is contracted where the walls are flared. An annular shoulder 4 serving as a rest for the cover 5 is formed toward the outer portion Of the neck 2, and an annular groove 6 is located immediately over the shoulder 4. Projecting from opposite sides Of the cover 5 are the tongues 7 which are designed to be received within the annular groove 6 for the purpose of locking the cover against the shoulder 4, the. said tongues being turned into registry with notches 8 in the neck of the jar over the groove 6 when it is desired to remove the cover 5, or place the same in position.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 28, 1907.
Patented April 28, 1908.
Serial No. 381,281.
' Pendent from the cover 5 and rigid therewith is a plug 9 which projects inwardly within the flared walls 3 of the neck and is preferably tapered toward the end thereof. A washer 10 of rubber or other suitable material is designed to be placed upon the flared walls of the neck 2 previous to placing the cover 5 in position. This washer l0 is preferably circular in cross section and is engaged by the tapered plug 9 which acts as a wedge to compress the washer against the l liared walls 3 and produce an air tight seal.
If desirable, a finger piece 11 may be applied to the cover 5 and the said finger piece enables the cover to be readily vturned to move the tongues 8 within the annular groove 6 so as to lock the cover in position, or in registry with the notches 8 when it is desired to remove the cover.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. The combination of a necked receptacle in which the interior walls of the neck are flared outwardly from the base thereof, the outer portion Of the neck havin a groove therein, a washer applied to the ared walls of the neck, a cover, a tapered plug pendent from the cover, and having a wedge action upon the washer, and tongues carried by the cover and having an interlocking connection with the groove.
2. The combination of a necked receptacle in which the interior walls of the neck are flared outwardly from the base thereof, the Outer portion Of the neck being provided with a shoulder and with a roove located immediately above the shOu der, the said neck also having notchesformed therein in communication with the groove, a cover normally resting upon the shoulder, a washer applied to the flared walls of the neck, a tapered plug endent from the cover and serving to engage t e washer, `and tongues carried by the cover, the said tongues corresponding to the before mentioned notches and being adapted to t within the groove.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
