UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER J. LAYMAN, OF AKRON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO FRANK X. ADAMS, OF AKRON, OHIO.
JAR-CLOSURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 14, 1908.
Application led November 1, 1906, Serial No. 341,597. Renewed October 30, 1907. Serial No. 399,787.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER J. LAYMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State oi Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar-(losures, oi which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
rlhis invention relates to receptacle closures, and the invention relates more particularly to a closure designed for jars, as fruit and milk jars.
The invention has lor its primary object to provide a simple and inexpensive closure, wherein positive and reliable means are employed for locking a cap or similar closure in engagement with a jar.
.Another object of this invention is to dispense with the use of corks and stopper clasps heretofore used for closing small receptacles.
To this end, I construct aar or similar receptacle with an annular liange adapted to support a cap and with inwardly projecting lugs ada ted to lock a washer upon said cap, said waslier being constructed whereby when it is placed in engagement with a jar or similar receptacle, the cap will b e firmly held upon the annular llange of said receptacle, thus insuring a positive closure of said receptacle.
The detail construction of my improved closure will be presently described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a jar equipped with my improved closure,v
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a Wrench employed for opening the jar, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 4 is a plan of a closure-disk constituting one of the elements of the closure, Fig. 5 is a plan of my improved closure, as applied to a jar, Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the closure-disk, Fig. 7 is a similar view of a modiiied form of closure-disk, Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the securing washer which locks the closure disk in position in the holder or receptacle. Fig. 9 is a plan view of a modified construction in which the closure-disk and washer are integral.
To put my invention into practice, I construct the opening or neck end 1 ol' a jar or similar receptacle with an interior annular shoulder or l'lange 2, located a slight distance below the upper end of the receptacle, and at the upper end with inwardly extending equally spaced lugs 3, said lugs being segmentshaped and occupying approximately onehal'i the circumference of the'jar or receptacle.
Upon the annular shoulder 2 is adapted to rest a closure-disk 4 having a depending portion 5 'fitting snugly within the inner wall of the flange 2 and an upwardly extending circular portion 6. The closure disk may, if desired, have a washer or gasket 5 surrounding the depending portion 5 as shown in Fig. l, to effect a close union with the flange 2. After the closure-disk is placed upon the shoulder 2 of the jar or receptacle, a washer 7 is placed over the portion 6 of the closuredisk, said washer having radially disposed lugs 8 corresponding to the spaces 9 formed between the lugs 3 of the jar or receptacle. The lugs 8 are formed with beveled ends 10, and said washer is provided with diametrically opposed openings 11, whereby a wrench 12 can be placed in the openings 11 to rotate said washer and cause the lugs 8 to ride along under the lugs 3 of the jar or receptacle. The beveled ends 10 of the lugs when being forced under the lugs 3 cause the washer 7 to seat rmly upon the closure-disk 4, and thereby force said closure-disk downwardly upon the shoulder 2 insuring a non-leakable closure for the jar or receptacle.
The wrench 12 which I use in connection with the washer 7 is preferably constructed of a piece of wire, bent to provide depending ends 14 adapted to fit within the openings 11 of the washer 7, and twisted to form a handle 15, whereby the wrench can be easily and quickly manipulated to remove the Washer from the jar or receptacle.
In Fig. 7 of the drawings, Ihave illustrated a modified form of closure-disk 4a wherein the edges of the disk are beveled as at 4b to insure a more positive closure of thej ar or receptacle,
while inFig. 8 of the drawings, I have illustrated afurther modification of the invention,
in which the closure-disk 7 a and washer 7l" are made integral, this construction being particularly adapted for bottles and similar small receptacles. To insure a positive connection between a jar and the device illustrated in Fig. 8, a gasket of rubber or cork (not shown) can be readily used.
I do not care to confine myselil to the type CIK of jar or receptacle in connection With which my improved closure is used, or to the size, proportion or minor details of the same.
What I claim and desire to secure by Ile-tters Patent, is
1. In combination with a jar' having an interior annular shoulder, and inwardly-projecting lugs carried by said jar above said shoulder, a closure-disk adapted to rest on the shoulder and having a circular depending portion fitting with the circular inner Wall of said shoulder, and. a Washer engaging the Closure-disk having a plurality of radially-disposed periplieral-lugs adapted to take under and engage with the lugs of the 2. In combination with a jar li aving an interior annular shoulder, and inwardly-projeoting lugs on the inner face of the ar above said shoulder, a closure-disk resting on the said shoulder and having a depending circular portion iitting With the inner Wall of the shoulder, a Washer engaging the closure-disk and having diametrica-lly-opposed Wrenchreceiving openings, and peripheral-lugs oarried by said Washer to take under and engage with the lugs in the jar, each lug on the washer having a beveled end., as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
PETER J LAYMAN.
