TIN, CANISTER, AND SIMILAR RECEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 8, 1912.
Application filed February 18, 1910. Serial No. 544,610.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PnncY LYTTEUroN LINEY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, of 9 Grosvenor road, Gunnersbury, in the county of Middlesex, England, engineer, have invented new Improvements in or Relating to Tins, Canisters, and Similar Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tins, canisters and similar receptacles, and more particularly to such articles which are used for containing substances or materials for domestic and toilet purposes.
It is a well known fact that the tins or the like used for tooth-powder, blacking other domestic and toilet substances cause considerable annoyance and trouble to open, espe cially in the first instance when it frequently obtains that loss of the contents results consequently upon force having to be applied to remove the lid or cover.
Various means have been devised with the object of facilitating the opening of such articles as above referred to but all have proved more or less unsatisfactory in use and diflicult or costly to manufacture.
The object of my present improvements is to overcome the foregoing disadvantages in a simple and extremely effective manner while at the same time in no way adversely affecting either the cost of production or manufacture.
With the above object in view my invention consists essentially in outwardly expanding or enlarging the upper edge of the tin, canister or similar receptacle and correspondingly molding the lower part of the flange of the cover or lid to fit thereover.
In order that my invention may be the better understood and carried into practical effect I will now describe the same with reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical section through a tin embodying my invention and suitable for use as a container for blaeking,
tooth-powder or the like; and Fig. 2 is a part sectional plan of the same.
According to the way of carrying my invention into eifect illustrated, and as applied to a small tin for blacking I outwardly expand, spin or mold, the upper edge a of the tin b to constitute a section of shallow depth but slightly larger diameter than the main or body portion 0 of the tin itself. The junction or intervening part between the edge a and the body a is preferably tapered down or chamfered as shown for strengthening purposes. The lid or cover (Z is correspondingly but reverscly shaped at its lower part c to fit over and tightly embrace the section a of larger diameter of the body 0. A slight pressure applied at one or more points for example by the fingers of one hand around the expanded portion 0 of the tin lid (Z will cause said lid (Z to be separated from the tin b easily and without loss or damage to the contents.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by my invention I provide an exceedingly simple and effective means for overcoming the objections set forth and its application to tins of larger capacity will be self evident without further explanation.
What I desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:
In an article of the character described, the combination of a cylindrical body portion flared outwardly near its upper edge and having a cylindrical upper edge of continuous circular outline, with a lid conforming in cross sectional shape to the said body portion, the lower edge of the lid fitting over the upper edge of the body portion, the edge of the body portion and the edge of the lid being elastic and compressible.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
PERCY L. LINEY.
