' N0 'S'gd'zf I lSpecification of Letters Patent. Patented April 14, 1908. c 1 .Application-median@ 1s, 1907. 'semina 378,716.
To all w7i`0m-'it may concern, tion of the clamp, which is preferably'made -Be it known that I, CHARLES M.SoRnNsEN, of metal, is shownmas consisting of two parts a citizen of the United States., and a resident rigidlyA secured together, the lower part 1 of Greenpoint, in .the county of Kings andl being U-shaped as-shown in the drawings,
.State of N ewV York, have made and invented `and-having a threaded opening 2 extending 60 certain new' and useful. Improvements in throughits rearwall, adapted to receive the Clamps, Lof which the following is a specii- -set screw 3, and recessesI 4 formed in the ends fcationj. .1 i of its forwardly extending arms 15 for the My inventionrelates to an improvement purpose hereinafter set forth.k The upper 10 in clamps, designed for any of-V the various part 5 of the-body portionis'also U-shaped, 65
`purposes and uses for which small clamps are the forwardly extending armsV 16 thereof i. ordmar' y employed. In' devices: of this `being considerably longer than the arms 15 kind, as ordinarily constructed, jtheie are of the lower part 1, and havingdownwardly t@ usually lemployed two or moreclamping extending end portion or portions 6 at their jscrews, yand twoor. more .movable clamping outer extremities, as clearly shown in Figs. 70 jmembers, oneofwhich is'desi ned to secure 1 and 3.
' the device or article to a ta lejbench or While I have shown the body portion as other suitable support, and the other for being made of two parts rigidly secured toclampmg, holding or securing the articleto gether by means ofthe screws 17, it will of be held 1n place to the body or frameofthe course be understood that I may make it of 75 clamp, thereby necessitating vseveral adjusto'ne piece withoutin any way departing from ments and rendering the article a comparathe spirit of my invention. It will be al's'o' tively expensive one, view -of the number understood without further description or of parts going to make up thesame'. p' illustration that the downwardly extending The object of vmy invention -is to so conends 6 which assist in holding the article to 80 struct the clamp that several of the-movable its support, ,may be scored, corrugated .or pgrts heretofore considered necessary, may otherwise roughened to assist in holding it 1n omitted, thereby materially reducing tlie place, or on the other hand, may have apcost of the same and enhancing the neat and plied thereto a lining of fabric to avoid injury lfinished appearance thereof, the several parts to said support. ig. 3, and. Fig. 53s a detached perspective Havin described the construction of my view of the clamping member. i 6 is a device, Ig will' now explain the manner of 105 i viewsimilar t`Fig. 1 showing'a modiiied using the'same: The clam is placed in posil fp'or other suitable lar to Fig. 5 showing the construction of the support .12,'with its bent ends 6 lying against A Vclamping member in its modified form. one side thereof, andthe clagnping plate 10 Re effing t0' the drawings, the body por-cl of the clamping member 7 lying upon the op- 110 7 will be forced thereby against the adjacent.
side of the support 12, whereby the clamp will be firmly secured to said support and at the same time and by l the same operation,
the rod 13 or similar device, will be firmlygripped between the set screw and the clamp- 1 ing member 7. Y
In Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown a modified form in which the rod, tube, standard,`or other similar device may be heldin either a l vertical or a horizontal position as may be desired. As shown in Fig. 6, the body portion of the clamp is practically the 'same as that shown in Fig. 1, the only essential difierence beingin the construction of the recesses. 19 in the body portion, which recesses are made wider and Ideeper than the corresponding recesses 4, shown in Fi 1, and are curved at the inner ends, as s own. The clamping member shown in Fig. 7 is similar to vthe one shown in Fig. 5, the essential diHerence residing in the construction of the horizontal guide lugs or flanges 20,l which are made wider than the corresponding members yshown in Fig. 5, and are provided with Horizontal recesses 21, adapted tolreceive the rod, tube,
lines in Fig. 6, or, i
in a horizontal position as shown in dotted lines in said figure.
y that l an ei'licient clamp,
standard, -orsimilar device which is to be clamped in position; clamping member are assembled, heldin position, and secured to the support in a manner similar to that described with respect to Fi s. 1 to 5, inclusive.
It will be understood from the above description that the rod or similar device ma be held in a vertical osition, as shown in fuil desired, it may be held I have shown a piece of felt or other similar material 18, secured to the face of the clamping plate to avoid injury to the support, though it will of course be understood I may leave theiace of the plate exposed as shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, vif I so desire.,l
It will thus be seen that I have` proyided by means of which a rod, tube, standard, or similar device may be secured therein, and said clamp secured to a support by one and the'same operation. It` will also be seen that the clam isadapted to be used with rods or similar evices of various sizes, and is capableof being attached to supports of diderent thicknesses.
