Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILEY I-IouoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monte Vista, in the county of Rio Grande and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drill-Boots, of which the following isa specification.
The invention relates to an im rovement in drill boots, being particularly cirected to the provision of a reversible and detachable point for such boots.
The main object of the present invention is the provision of a double point adapted for convenient detachable connection with the boot, whereby when necessary said point may be reversed or replaced by another in a simple and convenient manner without necessitating the removal of the boot.
The invention will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 1s a section on line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the point.
Referring particularly to the drawings, wherein is shown the preferred form of the invention, 1 represents a drill boot, which aside from the particulars herein noted may be of any preferred or desired construction and needs no further detailed description herein.
As at present constructed drill boots are provided with a point riveted or otherwise permanently secured to the boot and necessitating the removal of the boot and the detachment after more or less labor of the point and the application of a new one.
In carrylng out the present invention I form the point 2 of a strip of steel or the like, and render the same reversible by sharpening opposite ends to provide cutting ends 3. Intermediate the ends 3 the side edges of the point are bent inwardly to form lips 4, adapted to engage longitudinally disposed recesses 5 appropriately formed in the material of the boot adjacent the toe or end there,

The point 2. conforms in longitudinal curvature to that of the forward wall of the boot throughout the length at which the point is to be applied, and the recesses 5in the boot open through the lower edge thereof, so that said point may be readily applied from below by engaging the free edges of the lips 4 with the recesses at their lower ends and moving the point longitudinally of the boot to proper position. Within the boot and to the forward wall thereof is secured at 6 a spring arm 7, which at the lower endis formed with an eye 8 for convenience in operation and with a forwardly projecting stud 9 adapted to pass through an opening 10 formed in the forward wall of the boot and enter an opening 11 appropriately formed in the point 2. The spring is so tensioned as to normally maintain the stud in projected position, that is in position to engage the opening in the point. The point may be readily detached from the boot by drawing rearwardly upon the relatively lower end of the spring until the stud 9 is withdrawn from the opening 1 1, whereupon the point may be moved downwardly relative to the boot until the lips 4 are free of the recesses 5.
As constructed it will be clearly apparent that upon the operative end 3 of my improved point becoming dull or broken it is only necessary to detach the point in the manner described and again apply the same with the new or opposite cutting point in operative relation, or apply an entirely new point as maybe necessary. The detach.- ment and application of the point is extremely simple, requiring no tools and capable of being performed in the field by any one, the change requiring but the loss of a short time in the use of the implement. If preferred the spring arm may be dispensed with and the point secured in any other appropriate manner which will permit its convenient detachment as for example by a bolt or nut, or the like.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed, as new, is
1. The combination with a drill boot having recesses formed in its side walls, of" a point having lips to engage the recesses, and a spring pressed stud carried by the boot to engage the point.
