Description

PATENTED MAR. 17, 1908. R. THOMS.
DOOR LIFTER.
APPLICATION nun-n2. 12.1907.
ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
REIMER THOMS, OF SGHLESWIG, GERMANY.
noon-LIFTER.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known .that I, RinMER THOMS, a subject of the King of Prussia, and resident of N 0. 54 Friedrichstrasse, Schleswig, in the Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Improved Door-Lifter, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improved door lifter.
Special objects of the invention are to simplify and cheapen the construction and to render more efficient serviceable and durable in operation devices of the kind referred to.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the novel combination, arrangement and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter explained, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically set out in the appended claims.
Figure 1 shows the improved door lifte ready. for use. Fig. 2 shows the improved door lifter in the position of rest after. raislifting the door an ing the door.
The ordinary constructions of thedoor hinges require to be lubricated from time to time in order to secure noiseless movements of the door. This lubrication generally requires a lifting the door to some extent, so as to open a way for the admission of the lubricant to the hinge pin. By virtue of the considerable weight of the door this lifting 0 er ation is very cumbersome and deman s a great expenditure of human power. Besides the fperson lifting the door, a second person is requently called upon to perform the lubrication, while the door is being held in its raised position.
The resent invention obviates these drawbac {S and disadvantages in a simple,
racticable and efiicient manner. It greatly .acilitates and sim lifies the o erations of of lubricating the door hinges.
The essential feature of the invention con sists in constructing the improved door lifter in the shape of a two-armed lever, adapted to be actuated by foot-pressure and adapted to automatically hold the door raised, when the lifting movement of the lever is completed. The erson, having raised the door, is thus at liberty to move about and to perform at leisure the lubrication of the hinges.
The main body a of the door lifter is preferably constructed block-shaped. Attached Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 12, 1907.
Patented March 17, 1908.
Serial No. 362,033.
to, or integral with, two op osite sides of the main body a are the two orns b, c, which constitute the extremities of the two-armed lever a, b, c. Said horns b, c extend from the main body a a short distance above the bottom surfacef thereof. The surfaces h of the body a above the horns b, c constitute abutment faces for the door, as will be described in detail later on.
The mode of application of the improved door lifter is as follows :One of the horns (in the example illustrated in the drawingsthe horn b) is pushed with its tip 01 into the gap beneath the openeddoor and the floor, as
Owing to the force of gravitation and the V rotary attachment in the hinges, the door, while being lifted, simultaneously slides along the top surface of the horn 1), towards the face 7; of the center body a, against which it ultimately abuts. It thus sh fts the center of gravity into such a position relatively to the fulcrum and leverage of the twoarmed lever a, b, c, that the latter is prevented from tilting backwardly, when the pressure of the foot ceases. The door is thus held raised Without further manipulations and Without the employment of auxiliary appliances.
To provide against indentations in the floor, or in the carpet or other floor covering by the edge (1 constituting the fulcrum, it may be advisable to round said edge d. It may, further, be advantageous to construct the member a of the improved door lifter in the shape of a hollow body, so as to adapt its interior for the reception of an oil can or other requisites employed in the lubrication 100 of door hinges.
I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the detail construction and arran ement of parts as herein shown and described, as it is manifest that variations and 105 modifications therein may be resorted to, in the adaptation of my invention to varying conditions of use, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variation and modification as properly falls within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims.
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. An improved door lifter in the shape of a two-armed lever, adapted to be actuated by foot pressure and adapted to automatically hold the door raised, When the lifting movement of the door is completed, comprising a block-shaped center body a and a pair of horns b, 0 attached to, or integral with, two opposite sides of the center body a, substantially as set forth.
2. An improved door lifter in the shape of a two-armed lever, adapted to be actuated by foot pressure and adapted to automatically hold the door raised, when the lifting movement of the door is completed, comprising a block-shaped center body a and a pair of horns b, 0 attached to, or integral with, two opposite sides of the center body a, said horns extending from the side faces h at the lower portion thereof but a short distance above the bottom edge (1 of same, substan tially as described and for the purpose set forth..
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 7th day of February, 1907, in the presence of two subscribing wtinesses.
REIMER THOMS.
