To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. PAINE, of Boston, in the county of Suifolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvementin Velocipedes, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a velocipede having my improvement applied thereto.

Figure 2 is a front elevation of the same.

That class of velocipedes provided with two wheels, placed one in advance of the other, is objectionable, for the reason that they are unable to retain their vertical position when not in use, and consequently, in many situations where a convenient support is not at hand,

require to be laid fiat upon the ground, which'renders them liable to be scratched or otherwise injured.

My invention has for its object to overcome this ob jection; and consists in providing the velocipede with an arm, or support, so constructed and arranged that when the velocipede is not in use it may be held up out of the way, and at other times brought down into contact with the ground or floor, so as to support the velocipede, and cause it to retain its upright position, as required.

To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.

In the said drawings AB represent the wheels of the velocipede, arranged within the frame, ordinary manner.

D is the steering-post, which is turned to the right or left, by means of the handle a; and to one side of one in advance of the other, in the this post D is hinged, or pivoted, at b, an arm, or support E, the extremity of which terminates in a point, so as to prevent it from slipping when in the position seen in figs. l and 2; and when in this position it serves as a support to retain the velocipede in an upright position, thereby avoiding the necessity, in many situations, of laying it flat upon the ground, and thereby incurring the liability of scratching, or otherwise injuring it.

When the velocipede is to be used, the supportE is thrown up into the position seen in red, fig. l, where it is secured by a catch, 0, a slot, or opening, d, being formed at the inner end of the support E, so as to allow of its passing freely over the crank-fl It is evident that instead of attaching the support E to the post D, it may be applied to some other portion of the frame of the velocipede, without departing from the spirit of my invention.

The above-described device is simple, and may be applied at a trifling expense, while it afl'ords a convenientsupport, which is always at hand to retain the velocipede in an upright position.

Claim.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The arm, or support E, hinged at j, in combination with catch a, as applied to a velocipede, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
