vv11o-PE CLAMP;
ABPLIQAT'IONI'ILED AUG'. a1. 19o? ELWOOD CAREY, OF MYRTLE POINT, OREGON ROPE-CLAMP.
spcification of Letters Patent.
Application led August 31, 1907. Serial N o. 390,973.
To all whom it may concern:A Be it known that I, ELwoOD CAREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Myrtle Point, in the county of Coos and State of 4 clamp,adapted to be used upon hammock and tent guy ropes and which is so constructed as to be easily and readily shifted along the rope and which will positively engage and grip the rope after it has been adjusted.
The clamp consists of the jaw member having an eye at one end and a hooked por- -tion -at its opposite end. A member is pivoted to the first said member and constitutes the other jaw member of the clamp. The pivoted jaw member is ada ted to swing in a parallel plane only with re ation rto the first said jaw member. A pin is adapted to pass transversely through the pivoted memb'er and secure the same to the supporting jaw member and the pivoted member is provided with a notch for the'reception of the rope and with a notch for the reception of the extremity of the hooked end of the supporting jaw member.
In the accompanying drawing z-Figure 1 is a plan view of the clamp applied to a rope.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the clamp, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the clamp.
The clamp consists vof the supporting jaw member 1 which is provided at one end with an eye 2 and at` its opposite end with a hooked portion 3. The member 4 is pivoted to the member 1, as at 5, and is limited to swing in a parallel plane only to either side of the member 1. The cross pin 6 may be passed transversely through registering perforations in the members 4 and 1, whereby,
the member 4 is iixed with relation to the member 1. The member 4 is provided at its end with a rope receiving notch 7 and at its upper edge with a notch 8 adapted to receive the extremity of the hooked portion 3 of the member 1. In operation, one end of the rope -is attached to the eye 2 of the member 1 and the hooked portion 3 of the member 1 is passed around the rope at the point thereof desired to be clamped. The member 4 is then swung laterally on the pivot 5 and the notch 7 thereof receives the side of the rope and impales -the same against the inner surface of the hooked portion- 3 of the member 1. At the Sametime, the notch 8 receivesthe extremity of the portion 3 and braces the' same against strain. When the parts are thus a plied to the rope the pin 6 is inserted in t e registering perforations of the members 4 and 1, when the member 4 is restrained from movement relative to the member 1.
- While the herein described device has been referred to 4as designed for use upon hammock and tent guy ropes it is to be understood that it can also be used as a choker hook in logging on steep ground. These devices are used in this art for the purpose of preventing the logs becoming loose within the cable.
Having described 'my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent is A clamp comprising a supporting member having a hooked portion, a member pivotally mounted upon the supporting member and Patented March 10, 1908.
having a notched end adapted to lie within thehooked portion of the supporting member and being provided with a notch for the reception of the extremity of the hooked portion.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
y ELWOOD CAREY.
