Description

D. LONEY.
SAFETY GRIP HOOK.
APPLICATION FILED JAN-.212, 1919.
Ptented May 27,1919.
DAVID LONEY, OF DAVENPORT, IOWA.
SAFETY GRIP-HOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 27, 1919.
Application filed January 22, 1919. Serial No. 272,481.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID LONEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Grip-Hooks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety grip hooks for hoisting angle, channel irons, I-beams and other heavy objects, and consists of a simple device of this character which may be easily hooked to an object and held securely and as easily released.
The invention comprises various details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying draw ings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of my invention as adapted to an angle iron,
Fig. 2 is a detail View in elevation of the device, and
Fig. 3 is a front elevation.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter:
A designates a lifting member which is substantially semi-circular in outline, provided with a jaw B at one end and which is apertured as at C for the reception of the pivotal pin N. A hook, designated by letter F, is slotted as at H and straddles the ring end of the jaw in the manner shown, and is provided with an eye K in its ends, adapted to receive a pivotal pin N. The shank portion of said member A is provided with a plurality of apertures T in which shackles S are fastened, affording means whereby the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the hoisting cable or chain may be attached to one or the other according to the position it is desired to pick up the object to be hoisted.
In operation, the flat part of the jaw is placed underneath the angle iron and one wing of the latter is caught in the bight of the hook F securely holding the angle iron while being hoisted.
While I have shown my invention as being applied for use in lifting angle beams, it will be equally useful for hoisting the end of a car or other heavy object by inserting the jaw B underneath the object to be raised. When the device is lowered so that the lowest part of the member A will rest upon a fixed object a cable, or other means which is adapted to be attached to one or the other of the shackles, will slacken and the angle iron may be easily released by tilting the same, so that it may be released from the hook, as will be readily understood.
By the utilization of two shackles connected at different locations to said member A, means is provided whereby a hoisting cable may be attached to one or the other according as it may be desired to have the member A positioned, either as shown in Figs. 1 or 2 when hoisting an object.
What I claim to be new is:
1. A lifting device, consisting of a semicircular member having a jaw at one end, and upon which an angle iron is adapted to rest, a hook pivoted to said member and adapted to engage over the upper edge of the angle iron, and means for hoisting the device.
2. A lifting device, consisting of a semicircular member having a'jaw at one end, the shank portion of said member having apertures therein, a pin passing through one aperture, and a hook having a slot at one end with eyes upon either side of the slot in which said pin has pivotal connection, and shackles pivotally connected to said member.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID LONEY.
