Description

IIN ITED STATES FATENT OFFICE.
LUIGI CIARDELLI, OF BARRE, VERMONT.
LEWIS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUIGI CIARDELLI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Barre, in the county of Vashington and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lewises, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in lewises such as are employed in the hoisting of large stones and other loads, and it has for its object the production of a device of this character made up of but few parts and cheap in construction, and one which is quickly and easily operated.
Vith these and other objects in view my invention consists in the various details of construction which will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention Figure l is a view in side elevation showing the lewis placed in position to hoist a stone, the stone being shown in broken section; Fig. 2 is a similar view the parts being shown in the position which they assume when power is applied to accomplish the hoisting operation, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view, the shackle being shown as broken away.
Like reference numerals indicate the same parts in the several figures.
l designates a stone provided with a dovetailed recess 2 therein. 3 a shackle. 4. a tapered member provided with an eye 5 at its upper end through which the shackle 8 passes. 'Ihis member is provided with a foot 6 and inwardly curved sides or faces 7, the curve on the left hand face of said member having a less radius than that of the opposite face for the purpose to be presently set forth.
8 designates a wedge member provided at its upper end with an eye 9 through which is passed a shackle 10 the upper end ofwhich passes over the shackle 3. The left hand face of the member 8 is of flat form and the lower end of its inner face is curved as illustrated at 11, such inner face fitting against the inwardly curved face portion of the member 4.
It will be noted that the member 8 and its connecting shackle 10 are of greater length than the part 4;, so that when power is applied to the shackle 3 to hoist the stone the lift is accomplished by the part 4f, and
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 518,311.
none of such lifting strain is exerted on the member 8, its shackle 10 lying loosely on the shackle The upward pull of the shackle 3 on the part l causes it to rise in the mortise until its curved inner face contacts with the curved face of the wedge member 8, whereby the outer lower corner of said part l is' forced against the side of the mortise and the outer face of the wedge member against the opposite side of the mortise, whereby the two parts are tightly wedged in the mortise and the stone can then be lifted. lVhen it is desired to release the lewis from position the member 4 is dropped below the curved face of the Inember 8, when the parts can be quickly removed.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that my improved lewis is constructed of but few parts and hence is cheap in cost of construction and can be quickly inserted in place and removed therefrom. Also that the hoisting power is exercised in a direct line and that the lifting strain is exerted upon the member 4L only, none of such strain being exerted on the member 8.
W hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Iatent is- 1. In a lewis, the combination with two members of unequal length and having reversely curved abutting sides, of a lifting shackle connected directly to the longer member of the pair, and a shackle connecting the shorter member with the lifting shackle, the combined length of the shorter member and its shackle connection being greater than that of the longer member, whereby the lifting force is exerted upon said longer member only, as set forth.
2. In a lewis, the combination with a member having an eye at its upper end and provided with an enlarged foot and curved sides, of a shackle threaded through the eye of said member, a second member having a reversely curved side and provided with an eye at its upper end, and a shackle threaded through said eye and connecting with the shackle threaded through the eye of said first member and lying loosely therein, whereby the lifting force is exerted upon said first member only, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LUIGI CIARDELLI. lVitnesses:
