IT STATS GRAPPLING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 21, 1910.
Application filed. February 15, 1909. Serial No. 478,116.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY W. ERroKsoN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Willow Lake, county of Clark, and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grappling Devices, of which the following is a specifica tion.
My invention relates to grappling hooks.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned which will be of such construction as to be especially adapted to employment, in combination with a derrick or other hoisting device, in the removing of heavy stones or other heavy weights from farm lands or other similar places.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of a nature as stated which will be of the highest possible efliciency, it being my object to provide a grappling hook which will be strong, durable, and comparatively simple of construction, hence of low cost to manufacture.
Other object-s will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in View my invention consists in a grappling hook characterized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure l is a perspective view of the pre ferred form of my device. Fig. 2 is a detail side elevation of the upper end portion of one of the tongs of my grapple. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section thereof taken on the line w-w of Fig. 2, and Figs. 4 and 5 are front and side detail elevations respectively of the upper end portion of the other of the tongs of my device.
Referring now to the drawings my improved grapple consists of the substantially similar tongs 1 and 2, the angularly formed arm portions 3 and 4: respectively of which are pivotally connected at substantially their central portions by means of a pivotal pin 5. In order that said connection shall be of great efficiency I preferably provide said arm portion 4 of the tong 2 with a divergingly formed slot 6 of such a width as to be adapted to snugly receive the reduced upper end portion of the tong arm 3. Formed integrally with and divergingly projecting from the lower extremity of said arm portions 3 and 4 are the angularly formed, pointed claw or hook portions 7 and 8 respectively of said tongs 1 and 2, the lowermost end portion of each of said claw portions being preferably disposed at substantially right angles to the remainder thereof. The upper end portion of either of the arm portions 3 and t is provided with a bifurcation 9. Resting in each of said bifurcations, the same being mounted upon a shaft 10 the extremities of which rest in the upper end portion of said arms, is a pulley 11. Passing under and between said pulleys is a cable, chain, or rope 12 the extremities of which are secured to a connecting link or ring 13, the derrick or other hoisting device to be employed in connection with my grapple being connected to said link.
By the provision of a grapple of a construction as described, it is obvious that as weight or force is applied to the lower end portion of claws thereof, as when the same is used in elevating or hoisting of heavy stones, such force will be transmitted to the cable 12 which evidently causes the drawing of the upper end portions of the grappling arms together, thereby forcing the claws thereof into close engagement with the weight to be elevated. By such construction the heavier the weight to be elevated, the more secure and firm will be the gripment of the grappling hooks therewith. By arranging the jaw points at substantially right angles to the divergent upper portions of the hooks, the jaw points are so disposed as to each point inwardly in the general direction of a common center, so that the points are in a position adapted to enter crevices or irregularities in the stone and the weight supported by each jaw point is applied substantially in the general line or plane of said point. By connecting the tongs by pivoting one in a divergent slot in the other a rigid and strong connection is made well adapted to resist the peculiar strains introduced by this action of the jaw points, especially where uneven engagements are made by the different jaw points.
While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my invention, I do not wish to be limited thereto, as there might be many changes made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention.
And although I have designed my device with special reference to the elevating or removing of stones from farm lands, I may use the same for any other purpose to which it is applicable.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A grappling device comprising pivoted tongues l and 2; angularly formed arms 3 and 4, said arm 4 being provided with di vergent slots 6 adapted to receive arm 3, and each ofsaid arms 3 and 4 beingprovided with a bifurcation 9; divergent angularly formed hook portions 7 and 8 on arms 1 and 2; pulleys 10 and 11 in bifurcations 9; cable 12 passing over pulleys 11 and 12; and ring 13 secured to both ends of cable 12,isubstantiallyas described.
2. A grappling device comprising pivoted tongues 1 and 2; angularly formed arms 3 and 4, the said arm 4 being provided with divergent slots 6 adapted to receive arm 3, and each of said arms 3 and 4 being provided with a bifurcation 9; divergent angularly formed hook portions 7 and 8 on arms 1 and 2; each of said hook portions having a lower pointed member disposed at right angles to the upper portion; pulleys 10 and 11 in bifurcations 9; cable 12 passing over pulleys 10 and 11; and ring 13 secured to both ends of cable 12, substantially as described. 7
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
