JACOB C. WARNER, OF STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA.
DOOR-JACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 20, 1912.
Application filed April 20, 1911. Serial No. 622,414.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB C. WARNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Jacks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in jacks for lifting different members and particularly to a door jack for lifting and adjusting doors for the purpose of fitting looks or hinges, the object of the invention being to produce a jack which will lift the door easily and readily to any degree desired from a fraction of an inch to two or three inches as may be found adaptable.
A further object of the invention is to produce such a jack as will permit the door to be lifted and held to any point desired regardless of their infinitesimal difierence.
A still further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is de signed.
These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete door jack. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a locking b'ar. Fig. 1 is a bottom plan view of the forward end of the device.
Referring now more particularly to the charaetersof reference on the drawings 1 designates the base provided with a vertical post 2 and with side wings 3.
4 designates the top bar of the device which has the reduced end 5 resting on and projecting parallelly to the base 1. Said member 4: has side wings 6 connected by a cross rod 7 with the wings 3, said pin 7 being on one side of the post 2 and there being another pin 8 projecting across from the wings 4 on the other side of the post 2.
The numeral 9 indicates a spring bearing against the base 1 and disposed around the pin 7 and bearing against the plate 42.
The numeral 10 indicates a locking bar mounted over the pin 2 and having its central orifice 11 disposed obliquely with respect to the vertical plane of the post 2. This rod rests normally on the pin 8 and since the spring 9 presses against the plate 1 and causes it to have a tendency to remain in closed position, this will cause the pin 8 to bear against the plate 10 and causes the sides of its obliquely disposed orifice 11 to impinge against the post 2 thus holding the plate 4: by such frictional contact at any point to which it may be pressed from its outer end P.
12 is a spring wire clip member projecting into the bar 10 and having a handle member 13 projecting from the plate 41 whereby the locking bar 10 may be released from its frictional contact with the post 2 and thus permit the member 4 to be returned to closed or partly closed position as may be desired.
In operation the fiat end 5 of the plate 4 is inserted under the bar or member to be lifted, and then the outer end 4 which is spaced from the plate 1 is pressed by the foot or other means causing the end. 5 to move upward carrying with it whatever there is disposed thereon and the locking structure described will hold it in any position it may be moved to until the same is released by pressing the member 13 as described.
The numeral 14 designates bottom lugs which may bite into the floor or other surfaces to hold the plate 1 from slipping while the device is being used and similarly the member 5 may be provided with serrated members 15 to bite into the member which is being lifted to prevent slipping.
From the foregoing description it will readily appear that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construct-ion of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and useful and desire'to secure by Letters Patent is:
A device of the character described comprising a bottom member having a vertical post and side Wings, a top member having Wings, a pin disposed through said Wings on said bottom and top members hinging them together, another cross pin on the Wings of said upper plate, a locking bar normally resting on said last named pin and disposed over said vertical post in a manner obliquely with respect to the vertical plane of said post, and a spring Wire finger member secured to said locking bar and projecting through said top plate as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
