Application filed April 19, 1910. Serial No. 556,333.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSKAR LARSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Osakis, in the county of Douglas and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grips for Pulley- Goverings, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to grips, and more particularly to grips for use in stretching the covers upon pulleys and has for its object to provide a grip which may be used in this connection and which will be arranged to grasp and firmly hold the covering until the latter is secured in position.
Another object is to provide a device of this kind which will be extremely simple and which may thus be produced at a low figure.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the manner of applying the covering to a pulley by means of the present device, Fig. 2 is an enlarged'plan of the grip itself, Fig. 3 is a section taken through the gripping jaws.
Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises a stationary gripping j aw 5, having upwardly extending ears 6 at its ends, and having extended from its rearward edge a pair of convergent frame members 7, which thus lie at the sides of a triangular opening 8 bounded by these two members 7 and the jaw 5. At the apex of the triangle an opening 9 is provided which receives a ring 10 for the reception of a chain or rope to be employed in connection with the device. Upon a longitudinal line, the jaw 5 is bent to throw its side portions at an obtuse angle to each other, as indicated at 11, and formed in the ears 6 adjacent to the outer ends thereof, there are openings 12, the most forward portions of which are in a common plan with the line 11.
A movable j aw 13 is provided, and has adj acent to one edge and at its ends, a pair'of of the jaw 5 normally in a plane at right angles thereto, and as shown, the edge 15 of the jaw 13 which is directed toward the jaw 5, is beveled rearwardly away from the jaw 5 and, at its union with the forward face 13 of the jaw 13, forms a gripping rib 17, and this rib, by reason of the specific location of the openings 12 and the fact that the trunnions 14 lie at points of their peripheries flush with the forward face of the jaw 13, lies in the angle 11. A rearwardly extending handle 18 is carried by the jaw 13, and by means of this handle, the jaw may be rocked upon its pinions to move its rib 17 rearwardly and away from the jaw 5 as shown.
In use, a covering for a pulley, indicated at A, is attached to the pulley at one end and has its other end engaged between the jaws 5 and 13. The handle 18 is then moved toward the plane of the members 7, which brings the jaw 13 into position to securely grip the covering A between the rib 17 and the jaw 5, and by reason of thefact that the forward portion of the jaw 5 is bent upwardly, the covering is securely gripped between the rib 17 and the jaw 5, it being seen from the drawings that, as the jaw 5 is.
moved forwardly the rib 17 swings in an are which constantly approaches the upwardly bent forward portion of the jaw 5. It will thus be seen that the greater the pull upon the covering A, the more tightly this covering will be grasped by the grip.
WVhat is claimed is:
A grip for pulley coverings comprising a V-shaped, frame, a transverse member connecting the upper ends of the V-shaped frame, perforated ears extending rearwardly at right angles from either end of the transversely extending member, said transverse member having a lower vertically extending portion, lying in the same plane as the arms of the frame, and an upper portion inclining rearwardly in the direction of the said ears,
a blade disposed between the ears and journaled therein, the free end face of said blade inclining toward the inclined portion of the transverse member, a biting rib on one of the longitudinal free edges of the blade, the perforations in said ears being disposed with their centers opposite the angle between the lower and upper portions of the transthus securely holding the pulley covering beverse member, and Ya handle on the pivotal; tween said rib andinclined portion. 10 portion of the blade for swinging thesame, In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, said blade being so mounted that the rib is in presence of two witnesses.
