Description
No. 880,714. PATENTED MAR. 3, 1908 R. L. BRAY.
LAUNDRY EDGBR.
APPLICATION FILED-NOV. 5. 1906.
MWWL RALPH L. BRAY, OF LONG BRANCH, NEW JERSEY.
LAUNDRY-EDG-ER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 3, 1908,
Application filed Noveinber 5. 1906. Serial No. 342.103.
To all whom' it may concern:
Be it known that I, R'ALPII LIBRAY, cit-izen of the United States, residing at Long Branch, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Laundry- Edgers, of which the following is a specification.
Laundered articles and particularlysuch as are starclied and comprise a number of layers: of goods, after being ironed, require the opening of the button holes in order to admit of the buttons being. passed readily therethrough, and, moreover, the edges are rough particularly this is the case r ith collars, cufi's, shirt and wristbands after the same havebeen laundered a number of times.
This invention provides a device which admits of quickly smoothin frayed or rough edges of collars, cuffs and the like and of opening button holes so as to admit of easily passing the buttons therethrough.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a laundry edger and button hole opener embodying the invention. Fig- 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the.ap)lication of the invention. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view, show ng the device used for smoothing the edge of a collar when orn.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters. The device comprises a body or stock 1 which is provided at one end with a blade '3 and in its sides with a series of grooves 23.
The blade and body are preferably formed of asingle piece, however,,if preferred the blade 2 may be fitted to the body in any manner. The blade tapers in width and thickness to a point approximating the outline of a spear head. The end of the body adjacent to the blade 2 is made rounding so as not to injure the goods when using the device. The body 1 is of rounded form and is slightly tapered to present a neat appearance and enable the'device to be conveniently gras ed when used. The end opposite to the lade 2 is enlarged and made rounding,v
as shown at 4.
The grooves 23 are adapted to smooth the edges of collars, cuffs,.shirt-bands and the like when the device is passed over the edges thereof with the roughened ed e arran ed in aselect'ed groove, as indicate most 0 early in Fig. It is to beunderstood that when passing the device over the edge to be smoothed it is given a rotary movement to bring all parts of the annular groove into contact with the edge, and a slight pressure is brought tobear so as to lay the projecting. points which would be likely to cause irritation and to present an unsightly appearance. Attention is'directe'd to the fact that owing to the rotary movement of the stock the grooves 3 have a frictional engagement with the projecting points which assists in properly laying the same instead ofmerely compressing them. The grooves 3 may be of like formation, but in order to increase the scope of usefulness of the article it is preferred to have the grooves of different ize according to different thicknesses of goods or the kmdof edge to be formed.
The edger and button hole opener herein disclosed may be constructed of any material such as celluloid, metal, wood or the like and may be finished in any way and be of any SIZG;
1t frequently happens that a-collar, when I worn, irritates by reason of projecting points.
The present device may be utilized to smooth down the projecting points by applying-the rounded flattened em 4, as indicated in 4, the rounded end 4 being passed over the edge or rollof the collar and'bearing against the neck which serves to hold the device in proper position while passing it around the collar from one end to-the other.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: As anew article of manufacture, the herein described hand operated laundry edger comprising an elongated cylindrical stock 1 having a plurality of annular edging grooves 3 former therein tOWardone end, the o posite end serving as a handle for rotating t 1e tool and applying it to the edge of a laundered article.
In testimony whereof I alhx my signature .in presence of two witnesses.
