To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. ELLIOTT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washers for Button Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a washer for use in attaching buttons to sections of fabric, leather or the like. In the attachment of buttons, and especially shoe buttons, by means of wire staples to leather, imitation leather or fabric materials such for instance as is used in the manufacture of leggings and the like the clenching of the staple through the material forms a permanent connection for the button so long as the material does not become disrupted and destroyed adjacent the staple. lln practice, however, the severity of usage to which said material is subjected ordinarily suffices in a short time to pull the staple through the material. It is the object and purpose of the present invention to provide a device which may be used in connection with the attaching staple to protect the material at the point of attachment, the strain to which the staple is subjected being transmitted to said device and in turn transmitted from said device to the material but over a much wider area than in the case where the staple is attached directly to said material. A further object of the invention consists in the provision of a device of this character in which the legs of the staple may be bent inwardly and to a large degree be housed by the device so that said legs will not bear against the person when the article to which it is attached is worn. Various other objects and purposes together with novel construction for attaining the same will be apparent upon understanding of the invention disclosed in the accompanying drawing, in which;

My invention is shown in the application of attaching a shoe button to a section of material such as leather, fabric or the like, the button having a head 1 and an eye 2 as is usual and the section of material being indicated at 8. For attachment of the button to the material a wire staple is used having a central loop 4 in which the wire comprising the eye 2 of the button may seat and depending spaced apart legs 5 which when attached are bent inwardly toward each other and clenched against the underside of the material as illustrated in 2.

The washer 6 used in connection with the attaching staple is formed of thin metal and cut substantially circular in outline, the edge being formed with an annular inturned lip which bears against the underside of the fabric. The central portion of the washer is depressed as illustrated and at diametrically opposed points openings 8 are provided to permit the passage of legs 5 of the staple. There is also provided a central opening 9 which li openings 8 and furthermore the metal between

8 and 9 at each side is embossed to form grooves 10 as shown. In addition I prefer to cut openings 11 at diaaroduced commercially in large metrically opposed points in the washer and situated from the openings 8 a distance substantially equal to an arc of 90 degrees between which and the central opening 9 there may also be formed grooves 10 identical in form with grooves 10 heretofore described.

With a washer of this character located on the underside of the material 3, the legs 5 of the staple pass through the opening 8 and are clenched against the washer, the

legs occupy the grooves 10 or l0 while the extreme ends thereof come together at the opening 9 and may partially enter such opening, it being apparent that with this construction the ends of the legs 5 are bent so as to lie below the outer surface of the washer and are practically housed thus insuring against discomfort to the wearer.

In combination, a button having an eye adapted to be located on one side of a section of material, awasher adapted to be located on the opposite side thereof, said washer having a central opening and a pair of openings on opposite sides of and equally spaced from the central opening, and astaple inserted through the eye of the button with its legs adapted to pass through the material and pair of openings in the washer, said legs being turned inwardly toward each other and against the washer with the ends of the legs partially received in the central opening of the washer.

4. A washer for use in the manner described, comprised of a circular piece of thin metal and provided with a central opening and diametrically opposed openings spaced equally from the central opening, an annular lip turned to project from the edges of the washer, said central portion of the washer being depressed and formed with grooves between the central opening and each of the other openings, substantially as described.

5. A washer for use in the manner described, formed from thin metal and provided with a central opening and four additional openings positioned around the central opening substantially equal distances from each other, said washer also having grooves in alinement formed therein between the central openings and each of two of the additional openings, substantially as described.
