Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FLOYD Dow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Princeton, in the county of Bureau and State of Illinois,

have invented new and useful Improvements in Display-Racks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates particularly to display-racks capable of use for storing and displaying wire mattresses and my primary object is to provide a rack of the character indicated of exceedingly simple construction and admirably adapted to the purpose for which it is intended.

The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 represents an end elevational view of my improved rack with two woven wire mattresses stored therein; Fig. 2, a side elevational view of the rack; Fig. 3, a plan view of the rack, the dotted lines indicating one of the mattresses partially withdrawn from the rack for inspection purposes; Fig. 4, a plan section taken as indicated at line 4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a transverse section taken as indicated at line 5 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 6 a broken longitudinal vertical section taken as indicated at line 6 of Fig. 1.

In the construction illustrated, the rack comprises two rectangular end-frames A, A a pair of upper longitudinal side-bars A joining the end-frames; a pair of lower longitudinal side-b are A joining the end-frames; a U-shaped cross-member A connecting the central portions of the upper side-bars A a U-shaped cross-member A connecting the central portions of the lower side-bars I A longitudinally-disposed upper spacingbars A connected with the end-frames and with the U-shaped cross-member A; longitudinally-disposed lower spacing-bars A connected with the end-frames and with the lower cross-member A and planks or flooring-members A supported by the lower cross-members of the end-frames and by the lower intermediate cross-member A As shown, the spacing-members A", A are arranged in vertical pairs so as to divide the interior of the display-rack into longitudinal vertical spaces B, which may serve to receive mattresses B B The rack is open at its ends to permit insertion and withdrawal of the mattresses from either end of the rack. The space between the upper bars A and the l lower bars A designated Biis open, so that j a table or like article may be stored in the rack when the latter is not occupied by mat- E tresses. In. practice, each rack has a half j dozen or more of the spaces B, only three 1 of said spaces being shown in the drawing v for convenience of illustration. In practice, also, a series of the improved display-racks j may be arranged side by side in a row parallel 1 with and some distance from one of the walls i of the store-room to enable access to be had 2 to each end of each rack of the series.

j The construction of the frame may be varied. As shown, each end-frame comprises an angle-bar suitably notched and bent into rectangular form with the meeting ends brazed together, thereby lending rigidity to the frame. The upper and lower longitudinal side-bars A A may conveniently be angle-bars with the flanges thereof bolted to the inturned flanges of the upright members of the end-frames. The U-shaped intermediate upper cross-member A is preferably formed by notching an angle bar and bending it into U-shape, theinturned flange of each downturned leg of said U-shaped member being cut away. to accommodate the side-bar and the extremity of the other flange being connected by a bolt a with the adjacent side-bar. The lower cross-bar A comprises preferably a flat bar having its ends turned upwardly and connected by bolts a to the lower side-bars A Thus, a flat surface is provided for the support of the intermediate portion of the floor-members A". Each of the members A preferably comprises an angle-bar having one flange notched and the extremities bent upwardly and secured by bolts a to the top cross bars of the end-frames. -The intermediate portion of each bar A is joined by a vertical cross-member A Each of saidv bolts is threaded at both ends and equipped with nuts which serve to clamp the members through which the bolt ends extendi For. purpose of adjustment, the web of the crossmember A is provided with a series of perforations a and the upper cross-members of the end-frames are provided with perforations 0?. Thus the bolts (1?, a may be inserted through any desired openings for the purpose of regulating the width of the spaces B. The lower bars A are formed in the same manner as the bars A and connected with bolt 00' to the web of the intermediate upper the lower intermediate cross-member A and the lower cross-members of the end-frames, the connections bein similarly lettered. The end frames are preferably equipped with casters a".

It will be understood that my invention provides a rack of great strength and rigid ity, of moderate cost, and it will be observed that the rack may be easily knocked down for purpose of shipment. From Figs. 1 and 3, it will be understood that the mattresses are 'stored 011 edge, in pairs, and that mattresses may be withdrawn from either or both ends of a rack for exhibition.

The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no undue limitation is to be understood therefrom.

What I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a display-rack, the combination of a pair of rectangular end-frames, side-bars connecting said end-frames, upper and lower U-shaped cross-members connecting said side-bars intermediately, and longitudinallydisposed upper and lower spacing-members connected with said end-frames and with the webs of said U-shaped cross-members, for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination of a pair of rectangular end-frames, a pair of upper side-bars connecting said end-frames near their upper ends, a pair of lower side-bars connecting said end-frames near their lower ends, U shaped cross-members connecting said sidebars, the upper cross-member having its ends turned downwardly and the lower crossmember having its ends turned upwardly, and longitudinally disposed spacing-members within the frame thus formed secured to said cross-members and to the cross-members of the end frames, for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination of a pair of endframes, a pair of upper side-bars connecting said end-frames near their upper portions, a pair of lower side-bars connecting said endframes near their lower portions, U-shaped cross-members connecting said side-bars, the upper U-shaped cross-member having its ends turned downwardly and the lower U- shaped cross-member having its ends turned upwardly, and U-shaped longitudinally-disposed spacing-members having their webs connected with the webs of said U-shaped cross-members and having their extremities joined to the cross-members of the end frames.

4. The combination of a pair of endframes, connecting-members joining said endframes, and longitudinally-disposed laterally-adjustable spacing-members connected with the upper and lower cross-members of the end frames and dividing the interior into longitudinal vertical spaces, for the purpose set forth.

5. The combination of a pair of endframes, side-members connecting said endframes, U-shapeol cross-members connecting said side-members, upper and lower spacing members connected with said cross-members and with the cross-members of said endframes, and floor-members between the lower spacing-members and supported by the lower U-shaped cross-member and the lower cross-members of the end-frames.
