To all whom it may concern: v

Be it known that 1, PAUL J. HETTWER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of WVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mattress and Pillow Racks, of which the following is a description, reference being ha d to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in mattress and pillow racks.

It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a mattress and pillow rack for displaying mattresses and pillows in stores and factories and in which any mattress r pillow may be withdrawn from the rack without in any manner disturbing the other pillows or mattresses held in the rack.

A further object of the invention is to provide a mattress and pillow rack which may be easily modified to accommodate mattresses and pillows of various sizes and to also provide a rack which may be shipped in knock down form and easily assembled when it arrives at its destination.

A further object of the invention is to provide a mattress and pillow rack which is of very simple construction, is strong and durable and is well adapted for the purpose described.

With the above and other objects in view the invention relates to the improved mattress and pillow rack and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claim, and all equivalents thereof.

In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:

Figure 1 is a side View of the improved mattress and pillow rack, a part being in section;

Fig. 2 is a sectional detail View thereof on a larger scale taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;

. Fig. 3 is a side view of a modified form of rack adapted for holding pillows;

Fig. 4 is a Vertical sectional view thereof taken on line H of Fig. 3; and

Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the joints.

Referring to the drawing the numeral 8 indicates corner posts which are connected together in spaced relation in pairs 9 and 9' and diagonally extending brace bars 11. The bars are connected to collars 10 which are cast on the posts.

Specification of Letters Patent.

The corner posts 8 have socketed corner brackets 11 and 12 cast thereon in spaced vertical relation. The brackets are pro vided with outwardly extending offset portions 13 in which the tapered dovetailed sockets 1 1 are formed. The pairs of corner posts 9 and 9 are connected together in spaced relation by side bars 15 which have tongue members 16 cast on their opposite ends. The tongue portions 17 of each tongue member are of tapered form corresponding in shape to the sockets 14 and removably fit therein and form dovetailed joints when the parts are assembled together.

The side bars 15 are of L-shape in cross section and are engaged by the opposite ends of wooden slats 18 which are interposed between the side bars and rest upon the inwardly extending flanges 19 thereof, and are secured to the bars by nails or screws 20 driven through openings provided in said side bars. The slate and the said bars form compartments or spaces for holding mattresses, each compartment being adapted to hold one mattress so that they may be indepently viewed and removed.

The brackets 12 of the pair of posts 9 are similar in shape to the brackets and their offset portions 13 and are provided with the tapered dovetailed sockets 14 before mentioned which are adapted to receive and hold the arms 21 mounted therein. These arms are of L-shape in cross section and at their inner ends have tongue members 22 cast thereon which are adapted to removably engage the brackets 12 in the same manner as the side bars engage the brackets 11. The said tongue members 22 have tapered dovetail tongues 23 which fit into the sockets of the brackets 12 as before described. These arms have slats 2e interposed between and resting upon the lower flange portion 25 thereof which are secured to the arms by nails or screws 26. One or more of these slats 2% have vertical rods 27 passing therethrough which serve in connection with the slats to divide the space between the arms 21 into a plurality of pillow compartments or spaces 28 each one of which is adapted to hold one pillow in upright position so it may be clearly seen and easily removed.

In the modified form shown in Figs. 3 and 4c the pillow portion of the rack is separated from the mattress portion and the outer end portions of the arms are connected to posts brackets, slats connected to andext'ending between the arms, and vertically extending 15 rods connected to some of the slats and dividing the space between the arms into a plurality of spaces for independently holding pillows in vertical position. 7
