UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEONARD D. KROFF, OF STERLING, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO EVAN L. REED MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, 0F STERLING, ILLINOIS.
DISPLAY-RACK FOR GOODS.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 5, 1919.
Application led March 14, 1918. Serial No. 222,352.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD D. Knorr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county of vWhiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Racks for Goods, of which the following is a specifica tion.
My invention has reference to display racks for goods, for use in stores where it is desired to exhibit a considerable quantity of goods in a limited amount of space. It is of simple and durable construction, and can be reduced to a compact form for the purposes of transportation and storage.
One of the chief advantages of the invention lies in the fact that it can be assembled, ready for use, Without the aid of any tools, nor with the use of screws, bolts, or other fastening means.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of my invention, with part of the frames removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical, longitudinal section of the device. Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the shelf frames. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on the line -m of Fig. 3.
My invention comprises four standards 1, preferably formed of T-iron, and united in pairs at their lower ends by means of cross plates 2, forming -feet for such standards, and connected therewith by cross-braces 3. At intervals upon the standards 1 are arranged rectangular frames 4, provided with inner frames 5, connected with the outer frames by means of the extensions 6. Pivotally supported from the frames 5 are pairs of braces 7, having cross bars adapted for engagement with angular notches 8 in the inner edges of the standards 1, whereby the position of the frames 4 on the supports 1 is established and maintained. The braces 7 not only hold the frames 4 at the desired height, but they also act as bracing members, preventing movement of the frames 4 longitudinally in either direction. They also have the effect of maintaining the vertical position of the supports 1.
Each of the frames 4 is provided with a shelf 9, having openings 10 for the passage of the standards 1. The frames 4 and shelves thereon are preferably formed of similar length, but with gradually decreasing widths upwardly, so as to maintain the equilibrium of the device when it is loaded with goods. The parts of the inner frame 5 are preferably made of narrower material than that of the frame 4, so as to allow for the thickness of the shelf 9, and permit the upper face thereof to be flush with the upper edge 0f the frame 4. The shelves 9 can be formed of heavy cardboard, or other light material.
In assembling the device, the lower frame 4 is slipped downwardly over the supports 1 until the braces 7 are in engagement with the lower notches 8. The shelf 9 is then placed in position in said frame. This operation is continued with each of the succeeding frames, until all are in position. There is then very little movement of the structure longitudinally of the shelves, and any tendency to such movement is overcome by the weight of the goods on said shelves, increasin in proportion to the weight thereof.
hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure, is-
1. In a device of the class described, two pair of standards provided with suitable supporting means, and having series of notches at desired intervals in their inner edges, and a plurality of frames provided with swinging braces adapted for engagement with said notches, whereby said frames are held at established heights, and said frames and standards are united in a substantially rigid structure.
2. In a device of the class described, two pair of standards provided with suitable supporting means, and having series of notches at desired intervals in their inner edges, a frame provided with an inner frame adapted for engagement with the outer faces of said standards, and means carried by said inner frame for engagement with said notches, to hold said frame at a desired height on said standards, and to form therewith a substantially rigid union.
In testimony whereof I aliiX my signature.
LEONARD D. KROFF.
