To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, KATHERINE E. MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful improvemcnts in Ladies and Childrens Hats, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a hat for women and children.

The object of the invention is to provide a hat made preferably of white fabric, and having an improved construction to permit its parts to be dismembered so that each part may be reduced to a flattened condition in order to be readily laundered.

The construction is such as to make the crown of the hat octagonal, and to have the top of the crown larger than the band part which surrounds the head of the wearer.

Referring to the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hat. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the brim separated from the crown and showing the endless band which is to surround the head. Fig. 3 is a view of that part which constitutes the crown of the hat separated from the brim and in a [lattened condition. Fig. 1 is a plan view and shows the octagonal form which the hatcrown, seen in Fig. 3, assumes when it has been folded and attached to the endless head-band. I

The hat-brim, 1, is always flat and has an opening for the head at or near the center, and may have its outer edges scalloped as at, 2. I employ an endless band 3, which is to surround the head of the wearer, and this band on its outer side has buttons, 9, for a purpose that will presently be described. the present instance the endless band, 3, is attached to the brim, 1, and surrounds the center opening therein.

The crown is made separately from the brim, 1, and from the band, 3, and when folded and attached to the endless band, 3, is octagonal or eight-sided, as at, 10, and its top is flat as at, 4-, but the sides are swelled or bell-shape so that the top of the crown is much larger than the band, 3.

When in the flattened condition, as in Fig. 3, the crown part shows, in broken lines, 10, an octagonal center, 4, which is to become the top of the crown, and eight projecting tangs, 5, which radiate from the said center.

These tangs are taperedthe outer extremity being smallest-and the side edges have a concave curve, 7, and button-holes, S, are in each tang near its extremity and these holes engage the buttons, 9, on the band, 3. The octagonal broken line, 10, in Fig. 3 shows where the tangs are to fold in order to extend downward from the center, 4.

When the crown has been completely folded to its wearing shape, it is desirable to have it avoid the show of open slits between the tangs, 5, where they adjoin the center, 4; in order to prevent the show of these side openings, small \l-points, 6, are providedone of such points being between every two tangs. The points, 6, serve as a fullness of material where the side-openings would occur, and by folding inward, on the broken line, 11, the said points prevent the openings from showing.

The improved construction shown in Fig. 3 of the part which constitutes the crown, produces the desired eight sides, the bell-shape, the means for attachment to the band, 3, and prevents side openings from showing.

it will be understood the endless band, 3, is to surround the head of the wearer and on its outer side said band is provided with buttons, and that the downward contracted tangs of the crown are secured to the buttons on the endless band. The endless band, therefore, holds the lower ends of the sidetangs in their contracted position without regard to the brim.

ilaving thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is,-

A but comprising a brim having a center opening; an endless band attached to said brim around the center opening; a crown having a top surface of hexagon shape and larger in diameter than the diameter of the endless band, and having sides consisting of tangs whose edges are concave-curved and contract downward and are attached to the said endless band, and a \I-shapcd point between every two of said side tangs.
