FAIL-SUPPORTING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT R. PRrTcHARD, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fail-Supporting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pail supporting devices, and consists in the apparatus hereinafter described and claimed.
In the dravvings2-Figure 1 shows a pail supplied with this invention, Fig. 2 is an elevation of a portion ofthe device seen from the outside of the pail; Fig. 3 is an elevation of the same portion of the device seen from the inside of the pail and Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings the pail 1 is provided with a rolled or wired upper edge 2, and is manufactured preferably with the bead 3 on the side.
The device embodies a bail ear with means of supporting the pail upon the knees when it is used for milking cows. The bail ear consists of an outer sheet or plate 4 having a rib 5 adapted to fit over the bead 3 of the pail, and provided with the ears 6, 6, which project outwardly from the exterior of the pail. The upper portion of the plate 4 is of suitable form, here shown as in general circular, and has the wide edge 7 turned over and hemmed upon the similarly shaped edge of the inside plate S. A perforation 9 for the handle or bail 10 passes through both the inside and the outside plate. The inside -plate 8 rests againstthe inner surface of the pail, while the outside plate 4 rests against the outer surface thereof, leaving between them a suitable space between the curved portions 11 and 12, in which lies the beaded edge 2 of the pail. Rivets 13 are employed .to fasten the plates 4 and 8 together with the pail wall between them.
The handle 10 is hooked at the ends, as usual through the perforations 9 in the bail ears. In the projecting lugs 6 of each supporting deviceis held the knee support 14, which may consist of any suitable material, but in the present embodiment of this invenion is shown as a wire having parallel portions adap'ted to rest upon the top of the knee, and having on one end the outwardly horizontal depressed end 15 for resting in one of the perforated lugs 6, and having on the other end the terminal having the tally through said lugs, and the said knee support may thus turn freely downwardly into the dotted line position of Fig. 1. In fact, the device is so constructed that in accordance with the spring pressure of the arms of the knee support 14 on the lug 6, the device may be made so that said knee support may drop down automatically, or may require to be pushed down into said dotted line position. On the right hand side in Figs. 1 and 2, the wire arm carrying the end 15 presses against the inner side of its lug 6, and the terminal 17 presses against the inner side of the opposite lug to such degree as may be desired. Slightly bringing the arms of the knee support together or separating them will cause the amount of friction that A may be desired.

combination of a plate having outwardly projecting horizontally perforated ears, means for fastening the said plate upon the outside of a pail, a knee support having horizontal ends adapted to project through the perforations in said ears, and one of said ends having an upwardly turned termination for resting against a stationary abutment on the pail to hold said knee support in a substantially horizontal position.
