Description
No. 876,452. BATENTED JAN.14, 1908.
H. c. HARRISON'GE W. M. O'BRIEN.
HEAD SCREEN.
APPLICATION FILED MAY '1. 19'07.
WITNESSES NVENTORS /fl 47 2am UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY CLAY HARRISON AND WILLIAM MANNING O'BRIEN, OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, ASSIGNORS TO AUTO-MOSQUITO MASK COMPANY, OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH.
HEAD-SCREEN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14:, 1908.
Application filed May '7 1907. Serial No. 372.423.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY CLAY HARRI- soN and WILLIAM MANNINGr OBRIEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Screens, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to head screens, and particularly contemplates the provision of an extremely simple, light and improved structure, and one which absolutely precludes the possibility of a mosquito or similar insect reaching any portion of the wearers face or neck.
Our invention is especially designed to improve the structure shown in the patent to John Conlisk, Number 599,686, issued March 1st, 1898, in which we are interested.
Our invention further consists in the features of construction and arrangement as will be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the practical application of our improved device. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through our improved device, broken away at the cap portion, and Fig. 3 is a central cross section therethrough, also broken away at the cap portion, and looking from the rear of the device.
In the practical embodiment of our invention we provide a suitable cap 1, comprising a crown 2 and band 3, and constructed of any suitable material and provided with a semirigid flaring visor 4 extending almost entirely therearound and constructed of greater width at the front. The mask or face protector 5 is preferably constructed of a fine wire mesh, concavo-conveX in form, and provided with a suitable binding 6 around the edge thereof. The mask 5 is preferably secured to the cap 1 beneath the visor 4'in such manner as to stand out beyond the wearers face when in use. The mosquito netting 7, which is arranged to fall loosely about the shoulders of the wearer, is preferably constructed in two pieces, the front piece 8 and the rear piece 9 preferably bound on their edges with a suitable binding 10 and united by a binding 11 to form a continuous protection. The front iece 8 of the netting is stitched or otherwise fastened to the binding 6 around the mask 5,
and the upper remaining edges thereof and the entire upper edge of the rear piece 9 are permanently secured beneath the cap ,1 at the base of the band 3, and secured to lay along the under side of the flaring visor 4, dropping down from the edge thereof loosely upon the shoulders of the wearer, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The crown band 3 is preferably provided with an adjusting cord 12 laced through suitably appointed eyelets therein, whereby the said band may be tightened or loosened as desired.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I provide a simple construction, neat in appearance, and one which will at all times hang spaced from the Wearers face and neck, thereby preventing the netting or mask coming in contact with any portion of the wearers skin, at which time he might easily be bitten.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim:
1. A head screen comprising a suitable cap, having a flaring semi-rigid visor around its lower edge, a concavo-conveX mask or face protector of wire mesh, connected to and depending from the forward portion of the cap,
and the mosquito netting permanently con nected to the edges of said mask or face protector and around the lower edge of said cap beneath said visor, and suitably secured to lay along the under side of said visor, and to hang from the edge thereof, substantially as described. I
2. A head screen comprising a suitable cap, having a flaring semi-rigid visor around its lower edge, a concavo-convex mask or face protector of wire mesh, connected to and depending from the forward portion of the cap, and the two-part mosquito netting connected by a suitable binding, permanently secured to the edges of said mask or face protector by a second suitable binding, and further secured around the lower edge of the cap beneath said visor to lay along the under side of said visor, and to hang downwardly from the outer edge thereof, substantially as de scribed.
3. A head screen comprising a suitable cap beneath said visor, and the mosquito netting In testimony whereof We affix our signapermanently connected to the edges of said tures in presence of two Witnesses. mask or face protector and around the lower HENRY CLAY HARRISON. edge of the cap beneath said VlSOI, and su1t- 5 ably secured to lie along the under side of WILLIAM MANNING O BRIEN' said Visor from the edges of said mask or face Witnesses: protector around the rear of the cap and to J. R. HAAS,
hang from the edge of said visor. J OHN W. BURTON.
