Description

PATENTED JAN. 7 1908.
J. A. LINDBMANf COMBINED CHALK SHARPENER AND PAPER WEIGHT.
JULIUS A. LINDEMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED CHALK-SHARPENER AND PAPER-WEIGHT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. '7, 1908.
Application filed August 23. 1907. Serial No. 389,856.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS A. LINDEMAN, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Combined Chalk-Sharpener and Paper-Weight, of which the following-is a specification.
The invention relates to a combined chalk sharpener and paper weight.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of chalk sharpening devices, and to provide a simple, inexpensive combined chalk sharpener and paper weight, designed for sharpening tailors chalk and adapted to enable the sane to be conveniently held for cutting the edges of the chalk at the desired bevel.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having a box or receptacle for the dust, and adapted to enable the contents of the form er to be read ily emptied without removing any of the arts.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the chains, n' ay be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a con. bined chalk sharpener and paper weight, constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse seciional view.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
1 designates the body of the combined chalk sharpener and paper weight, designed to be cast of glass, brass, or other suitable metal, but it may be constructed in any other preferred manner. The body, which is hollow, consists of a bottom 2 and vertical side and end walls 3 and 4, and it, has an interior chamber 6 to receive the dust.
The combined chalk sharpener and paper weight is provided at the top of the chamber 6 with a longitudinal series of transversely disposed blades 8, separated by intervening slots or spaces 9 and terminating at or near the side walls 3. The blades taper to the top and present sharp edges to the chalk 10, which is held in an inclined position, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The chalk is reciprocated over the transverse blades to bevel its edge, and in order to enable it to be held and operated with greater ease and convenience, the top of the combined chalk sharpener and paper weight is provided at opposite sides of the longitudinal series of the transverse blades with grooves 11, having their bottoms curved transversely, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing. The chalk is held between the thumb and second finger, which rest in the groove at one side of the device, and the pressure is applied by the index iinger, which is arranged upon the chalk. into the chamber 6, and may be readily shaken out when it is desired to empty the device.
The weight of the device and its particular form enables it to be advantageously employed as a paper weight.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A combined chalk sharpener and paper weight provided with a chamber and havlng a plurality of spaced blades extending over the chamber and having sharp upper edges, said chalk sharpener and paper weight being also provided at its upper face with a groove disposed at an angle to the blades and arranged to receive the thumb and finger, whereby a piece of tailors chalk may be held and guided over the said blades.
2. A combined chalk sharpener and paper weight consisting of a hollow body having an interior chamber and provided with a series of spaced blades extending over the top of the chamber, said body being also provided at opposite sides of the series of the blades with longitudinal grooves presenting transversely curved faces to the thumb and "finger, said. body and blades being made integral.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto alIixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JULIUS ALEXANDER LINDEHAN.
IVitnesses:
JOHN J. Renee, O. MoIIN.
