Be it known that we, T. BAILEY and VIRGIL W.

l BLANCHARD, of Bridport, in the county of Addison, and State of Vermont, havejnvented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machine; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference Our invention consists inthe employment, in a wash# ing-machine, 'of a perforated diaphragm, revolving on rollers, in connection with a spring clothes-pounder, for lhc purpose of injecting the dirty water from the clothes, through said perforations, into the bottom of the tub.

.To enable others skilled in the art to which our invention relates, to make and employ the same, we will now `proceed 1 to describe'i'ts' construction and operation.

c designates a standard mortsed into the bar or support B, at one end, and provided at its upper end with a slot, into which is pivoted a lever, .0, having its opposite end passing through a slotted upright bar or standard,d, secured to the support B, and also provided-with a handle, by which it may be operated.

Pivoted at its slotted end to the lever O, is an arm or bar, f, to the lower-end of which lis hinged another bar, m, made4 rounding on its lower portion, and prof vided thereat with a spiral spring, s, to be referred to hereafter.

D is the spring clothes-pounder, which consists of the shoulder. or cross-piece b, through which passes the bar lm, it also being secured thereto.

L To the under side of this shoulder, on each side of bar m, is secured a bar or rod, m, passing through openings in the squeezer, or block, .m2, which is secured to the cross-piece b, by means of the spring s, .which will allow it to slide up and'down on the rods mr and har m, when operated so as to inject the water from the clothes through the perforated diaphragm E into the bottom of the tub.

E is the diaphragm, which is furnished with openings, e e, and made to revolve on rollers, e2 e, securedV to its lower side.

l F is a vertical shaft, pivoted at its lower end-in the' By means of the vertical shaft F, which is attachedV to diaphragm E, motion may be given to said diaphragm. L.

The operation of our machine is as follows:

The clothes or articles'to be washed being inserted, with a sufficient quantity of water to cleanse them, into the tub, and the clothes resting on the diaphragm E, motion will be given to the lever C, which will cause the injector to have an upand-down motion, pressing against the articles being washed, while the diaphragm E will have a revolving motion, 'so as 'to present the surface of the clothes to be washed,V to the action of theinjector, and thus cause the dirty water from the clothes to be injected, through the -perforations in the diaphragm E, into 'the bottom ofthe tub, and thus separating the--dirty water from the water in which the clothes are being washed.

We do not claim the employment of a spring-pounder in washing-machines; but

In a washing-machine, the tub A, diaphragm E, shaft F, support B, ratchet-wheel G, pawl g, bar g1, armor bar g2, lever C, uprigbts c and d, arm j, and spring clothes-pounder D, all constructed, arranged, and operated substantially as and for the purpose described. i
