No. 828,428. Patented out. 18, 1885.
A ZZ
nvr/E TOR GUSTAV PIPER, OF NEW HOLSTEIN, IVISGONSIN.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,428, dated October 13, 1885.
Application filed June 1l, 1885. Serial No. 168,330. (No model.)
of the invention, which will enable others` skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my immeans of an upright prop, L, secured to the side of the box and bearing with its upper end against the longitudinal raised part M of the cover when the latter is raised. This longitudinal raised part at the middle of the cover forms a longitudinal recess upon the inner side ot' the cover, and two series of arms, N, are pivoted at their upper ends in the sides of this recess opposite to each other, and are connected so as to swing parallel with each other by means of longitudinal strips O, pivoted to the outer sides of the arms at their middles, and by means of a board,P,pivoted to the inner sides of the arms i5 proved washing-machine, showing the lid ofl at their middles, having the pivotal bolts Q the machine raised. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal passinginto its outeredges. Oneofthesearms 7c Vertical section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a extends through a slot, R, in the cover, and
cross-section.
Similar letters ot" reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
My invention has relation to that class of washing-machines in which the clothes are rubbed against a series of crossslats in the bottom of the suds-box by means of a reciprocating rubber; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of partsv ot' the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the suds-box, which is mounted upon legs B, and which is provided upon the inner side of its bottom with a number of transverse strips, C, cut oft at their ends, so as to leave a narrow channel at the sides of the suds-box, and secured by means of longitudinal strips D, having notches E in their lower edges, into which notches the crossstrips fit, having notches cut at their ends, as shown at F, for the passage ot' the suds, and having their upper edges serrated or waved, as shown at G, and secured to the bottom of the suds-box.
The sudsbox is provided at one end with a perforation, H, having a plug, I, and the suds or water may be drawn oii'f from the sudsbox by removing this plug, the cut-off ends of the cross-strips and the notches at the ends of the serrated longitudinal strips allowing the suds or water to pass freely around the bottom of the suds-box.
A cover, J, is hinged to one side of the suds-box and may rest with its edtes upon cleats K, around the edges of the sides of the box, and may be supported when open by forms a handle, S, by means of which the arms may be rocked forward and back.
When the clothes are placed in the sudsbox, and water is tlled into the same, the handle may be rocked, which will cause the pivoted arms to rock forward and back, drawing the clothes over the transverse strips and rubbing them against them, the board at the same time squeezing the clothes at the middle of each stroke, when the board is in its lowest position, thus thoroughly working the clothes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, in a washing-machine, of the suds-box having the transverse strips in its bottom and the waved longitudinal securing strips, the cover having the raised portion forming a recess upon the inner side of the same, and having a longitudinal slot in it, the downwardly-projecting arms pivoted opposite toeach other in the sides of the longitudinal recess of the cover, the connectingstrips pivoted to the outer sides of the arms at their middles, and the board pivoted between the inner sides of the arms at their middles, one of the arms extending upward to form a handle projecting through the slot in the cover, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GUSTAV PIPER.
