ALBERT B. MCDANIEL, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
'ADJUSTABLE AND PORTABLE CARRYING-STOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1907.
Application filed July 7' 1905, Serial No. 268.600- Renewed September 21, 1907. Serial No. 393.916-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT B. McDANIEL, a resident of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable and Portable Carrying-Stools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to seats or stools and has special reference to such a stool that is adjustable and portable and can be carried on the person of the party desiring to use the same.- The object of my invention is to provide such a form of a seat or stool which will not be in the way of the person carrying the same in the performance of any work and will always be in position for ready and instant use for the act of sitting on the same when desired, while at the same time it is portable and easily and quickly applied or removed from the person, and can be adjusted to suit the different heights of the person desiring to use the same as a seat or stool.
My invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved seat or stool, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a face view of my improved seat or stool in position as used around a person. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 8 is an enlarged view of a portion of one of the supporting posts or legs. Fig. 4 is a view of the strap supporting loop.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the drawmg.
As illustrated in the drawing 1 represents two supporting posts or legs which are preferably circular in cross-section and formed of wood. Each of said legs 1 are provided with a rack, gear or ratchet face 2 thereon and preferably formed on a plate 2 which is secured in any suitable manner within a recess 1 formed in said le s and located at the upper end portion 1 thereof. This upper end portion 1 of the legs 1 is slightly smaller than the lower portion thereof and by being made smaller forms a shoulder 1 on said legs for the purpose of preventing the dropping down of the sleeves and other parts hereinafter described from said upper end portions.
Fitting around each of the upper end portions 1 of the legs 1 is a slidable sleeve 3 which has a block 4 within the outer part of the same, on which one end of a leaf spring pawl 4 is secured for engaging with the ratchet face 2 on said legs and such pawl is provided with a thumb portion 4: extending out from the engaging end thereof.
Beneath the sleeves 3 and extending around each of the legs 1 is a loose ring 5 which is pivoted or hinged at its inner end, as at 5, to the outer face 5" of a guiding-loop 6, through which a supporting strap 7 passes apd has the usual buck e 7 at one end there- 0 flanged or hooked portion 6 extending'inwardly from the top of the same and such portion is adapted to fit over the edge of the waist band on each side of the persons trousers for the purpose of supporting my im proved seat or stool as hereinafter described. Below the sleeves 3 and rings 5 on each of the legs 1 is another slidable sleeve 8 on the outer part of which is pivoted at 8 a pawl 9 for en gaging with the ratchet-face 2 and having a thumb-piece 9. extending out therefrom under which is a leaf-spring 9" for holding said pawl in engagement with said ratchet in its normal position. On the inner part of each of the sleeves 8 is pivoted at 10 the ends of a U-shaped arm 10 and to this arm is connected the spring-snap 11 secured to and carrying the flexible seat 12 which is formed of any suitable material such as cloth, duck, canvas, etc.
When it is desired to use my improved seat or stool the parts are in place as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and the party desiring to use the same places the parts upon his person to a carry the same by inserting the top edge of his trousers waistband within the hooked portions 6 on the loops 6 which will support the entire seat or stool parts and act to retain them in position for use at all times, as well as the strap 7 in position around the These loops 6 are provided with a bentwaist of the person. After the strap 7 is buckled around the waist in the usual man ner. The slidable sleeves 3 are then slid along the posts or legs 1 to the proper height by raising the pawls 4 thereon from the ratchet face 2 on the legs through the medium of the thumb portions 4, so that when the person is standing in an erect position the said sleeves will come against the rings 5 on the strap 7 and so raise the lower ends of said legs from the floor or ground to "a sufficient distance not to interfere with the movements or labors of-such person. After this is accomplished the pawls 4 are allowed to spring back to engage the ratchet-faces 2 and so hold the sleeves 3 in position. The seat 12 is adjusted to its proper position for instant use by moving the slidable sleeves 8 along the legs 1 to their proper height by raising the spring operated pawls 9 from engagement with the ratchet face 2 through pressing on the thumb-piece 9 and when in position the pressure on said thumb-pieces are released to allow the pawls 9 to drop or spring back into engagement with the ratchet-face 2 and so hold said sleeves S in place. It will be evident that when my improved seat or stool is so held upon the person of the party carrying and using the same, that the seat 12 will be allowed to swing on the sleeves 8 by reason of the arms 10 and spring-snaps 11 connecting said seat with such sleeves and such seat 12 being naturally held at the inclined position shownin Fig. 2, so that on account of the shape of the person it will always be in place to permit such person to sit down on the same. When a person is sitting on the seat 12 the bottom of the legs 1 will come in contact with the floor or ground and w ill thereby allow the rings 5 on the strap 7 to slide down along the legs 1 or such legs to slide through said rings, as the case may be, thereby freeing said rings from under the sleeves 3 on said legs, to which position they will again assume when the person has again resumed a standing position in order to permit the carrying of said seat or stool and its parts.
It will be obvious that the sleeves 3 and strap 7 with rings 5 can be easily and quickly removed from the legs 1 as well as the strap from its loops 6 on said rings, while the sleeves 8 can also be easily and quickly removed from said legs and the seat 12 from said sleeves 8, so that all parts for my improved seat or stool can be packed together in a comparatively small space for standing, carrying or shipping. The parts for forming such seat 'or stool can also be assembled easily and quickly for use and when in position' can be adjusted rapidly and conveniently when on the person.
It will thus be seen that my improved seat or stool is formed of few and simple parts and being strong and durable will not get out of order or be liable to breakage. The device is cheap and eificient for its uses and purposes and is especially useful to operatives whose duties or labors require a standing position and in such places where the usual stool or chair could not easily be used, as on street cars, elevators, etc.
Various modifications and changes in the design and construction of the various parts of my improved stool or seat may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination of two supporting legs having ratchet-faces thereon, means connected to said legs for carrying the same upon the person, sleeves on said legs and adapted to engage with said ratchet-faces, and a seat connected to said sleeves and extending between said legs.
