NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. LEAVITT, JR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,273, dated February 13,1883.
Application filed September 28, 1882. (No model.)
ends the chair is made with a back extending upward from the ground or other surface on which the chair rests, having combiiied with it a hinged seat in front and a hinged prop in the rear, said seat and prop folding up against opposite sides of the back when the chair is closed, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of a. folding chair embodying my invention and as extended for use, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same folded. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of a modified construction of the chair, showing the same extended; and Fig. 4, a side view of the same closed.
Referring in the first instance to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings,A is the chair-back, of any desired height or length and width.
B is the seat, which is connected with the back A in front at its lower end by hinges b, arranged to admit of the seat closing up against the back and of opening so as to rest but upon the ground, as shown in Fig. 1.
Hinged to the upper end of the back A in its rear, as at c, is a prop, 0, extending down to the ground and serving, as it is more or less spread outward, to vary the angular position of the back A, relatively to the seat B, as well as to support said back.
Both the seat and back may either be left plain or be covered with any suitable material.
A folding chair thus constructed will be found well adapted both for invalids and pleasure parties. Thus, by placing a pillow on the seat or against the seat and back, an invalid who cannot be, lifted from his bed to sit up may easily have the chair passed under and adjusted to him on the bed. It will also be found very useful to other sufierers who are compelled to occupy a partially --recumbent and partially-sitting posture, and exceedingly convenient to pleasure seekers at the seaside, or for use on a lawn, as by such chair the occupant can be seated as if on the ground without exposing his person to the risk of cold by dampness in the ground, and at the same time have a support for his back. hen the chair is folded, as shown in Fig. 2, it is very compact and readily portable.
The modification represented in Figs. 3 and 4 also shows the back A with the seat B hinged to it in front, and with a rear hinged prop, O, for supporting and adjusting the inclination of the back, and the whole folding up flat, as represented in Fig. 4; but in this case the seat 13 is hinged to the back at some distance above its lower end, and a brace, D, hinged to the seat at d and resting against or engaging with a notch, c, in the back A, serves to support the seat when extended, as shown in Fig. 3.
If desired, a chain or cord may be used to connect the back A and rear prop, (l, at any suitable distance below the hinge b, to keep said prop from slipping and to retain it in a given angular position relatively to the back when the chair is extended.
I am aware thata seat-frame adapted to be secured to a board or bench has been provided with a hinged back held at any desired inclination by side straps secured to the said frames; and I am also aware that a seat has been provided with a hinged back held at any desired inclination by a spring attached to the back and seat, and a screw working in a nut on the back and taking against a step on the seat; and I am further aware that a frame supporting an adjustable head-rest and an awning, and having a canvas back and apron or skirt made in one piece, has been provided with a hinged frame forsupporting it in any desired position, and I therefore do not claim such inventions. 7
Having thus described my invention, what lit I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters to be moved to or from the back to vary its Patent, is inclination, substantially as herein shown and 10 In a folding chair, the combination, with the described.
back A, of the seat L, hinged to the lower GEORGE LEAVITT, JR.
5 front edge thereof and adapted to rest upon the ground, and the prop O, hinged to the up- Witnesses: per rear portion of the back and having its EDGAR TATE, free end resting upon the ground, and adapted EDWD. M. CLARK.
