Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1907.
Application filed August 30. 1907- Serial No. 390,761.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN Pnnsoorr, of Arlington, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Shutter-i/Vorkers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to blind operating devices and particularly applicable to folding blinds.
The invention has for its object to provide improved means for connecting the outer blind-section of a folding blind with the window-casing, whereby said outer blindsection will not only be operated by the inner blind-section, as the latter is swung on its hinges by means of an operating-device which is provided for swinging it, but also will be held rigidly in any position. it may occupy. Figure 1 shows in front elevation a folding blind provided with means embodying this invention for connecting the outer blind-section with the window-casing, the blind being closed. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the folding blind, the blind being closed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the folding blind, the blind being open.
(i, represents the inner blind-section and b, the outer'blind-section of a folding blind of any usual or suitable construction. The blind-section a is adapted to be hinged to the window-casing by any suitable form of hinge. The blind-section b is hinged to the blindsection a at b.
An operating-device is provided for operating the folding blind which is connected with the inner blind-section a, which is herein represented as a shaft 0, extending through the wall of the building and connected at its outer end in a universal manner with a bar 0 which is connected to the inner blind-section and having at its inner end a hand-piece by which it may be operated. This operating-device is herein shown merely for the purpose ofillustratin one form of operating.
device by which the lind may be operated,
but so far as its construction is concerned, it forms no part of my present invention, and
' in lieu thereof any other operating-device may beemployed which is constructed and arranged to operate the blind.
To the upper end of the outer blind-section b, near its outer edge, or to some other part thereof, one end of a connecting-rod d is loosely connected, as for instance, said rod may be formed with an eye d which engages an eye d of a screw-eye which is screwed into the blind-section, or said rod may be otherwise loosely connected with said blind section. The opposite end of said connectingrod d is adjustably connected to an attaching-device e which is pivotally connected to the window-casing at any suitable point.
The attaching-device consists essentially of a short tube or it may be a tubular case, having a hole through it transversely near one end through which a screw e extends, which is screwed into the window-casing, thereby pivotally connecting the attachingdevice to the window-casing in such manner that it may swing freely on said screw as a pivot. The attaching-device, thus pivotally connected to the window-casing, is disposed horizontally. The end of the connecting rod d is of suitable size to enter the longitudinal hole in said tube or case, and when placed therein is secured by a set-screw 6 The tube or case e is made long enough to provide for considerable adjustment of the connecting-rod d, which is accomplished by loosening the set-screw, then moving along the connecting-rod and then tightening the set-screw. Adjustment of the rod with the attaching-device is preferably made when the outerblind-section is closed. The connecting-rod may be otherwise adjustably connected with the attaching-device.
By means of the connecting-rod d, the outer blind-section will be swungon its hinges by the inner blind-section, as the latter is swung on its'hinges by the operating-device, so that by manipulating said operating-device both sections will be moved. By adjustment of the connecting-rodd in the manner described, a rigid connection will be provided between the outer blind-section and the window-casing, whereby said outer blind-section will be rigidly held in any position it may occupy as the inner blind-section is swung by the operating-device. Whether opened or closed which equivalent arrangement comes within the spirit and scope of my invention. By connecting the rod cl to the inner side of the outer blind-section and to the under side of the window-casing it will be observed that it may be applied from the inside of the room, but it is obvious that the connections of the connecting-rod with the outer blind-section and the window-casing may be otherwise arranged.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1, The combination with a folding blind and means for operating it, of a connectingrod for connecting the outer blind-section with the window-casing having a loose connection at one end with one of said parts and having an attaching-device at the other end which is pivoted'to the other part, said rod being adj ustably connected with said attaching-device, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a folding blind and means for operating it, of a connectingrod loosely connected at one end to the outer blind-section, an attaching device pivoted to the window-casing and means for adjustably connecting the opposite end of said connecting-rod to said attaching-device, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a folding blind and meansfor operating it, of a connecting rod loosely connected at one end to the outer blind-section, a tubular case pivoted to the window casing, adapted to receive the opposite end of said connecting-rod, and a setscrew in said pivoted case for adjustably securing said connecting-rod thereto, sub,- stantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
