PATENT ED OCT. 22. 1907.
A. D. KNAPP. TRAIN ORDER HOLDER.
APPLIOATION FILED AUG-1, 1907.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT D. KNAPP, OF SAXONBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
TRAIN-ORDER HOLDER.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT D. KNAPP, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Saxonburg, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Train-Order Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to train order holders, and its object is to provide a simple and inexpensive device for delivering orders to railway train employees while a train is in motion.
The invention comprises a loop provided with a spring clamp to engage the order sheet, and a handle to which the arm is detachably secured.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, and its novel features will be defined in the appended claims.
In the drawing:Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of the same broken away, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified construction, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the modification, and, Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section on an enlarged scale of the handle employed.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 the reference numeral 1 designates a ring or loop of heavy wire bent at one end to form an eye 2 to receive a hook 3 formed on the opposite end of the wire. The ring 1 is also formed with a. bend 4 serving as a seat for a spring arm 5 which is pivotally secured to the eye 2, and bent upon itself to form a loop 6 by means of which it is detachably engaged with a handle.
The handle consists of a body portion 7 recessed to provide a space 8 for a spring 9, and having a lug 10 to which is pivotally secured a clamping jaw 11., said jaw together with the body portion of the handle being recessed to form a seat 12 for the end of the loop 6 of the arm 5. The under side of the jaw 11 is recessed, as at 13, to accommodate the spring.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 22, 1907.
1907. Serial No. 886,606.
The utility and operation of the device constructed as above described will be readily understood. The train order slip 14 is clamped between the spring arm 5 and the ring 1, and while the handle is held by an attendant, a train employee inserts his arm into the ring 1 while the train is moving. The yielding of the handle spring 9 releases the ring, thus delivering the order slip.
In the modification shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the spring arm 5 is extended beyond the eye 2, and bent around the adjacent portion of the ring, thus strengthening and reinforcing the ring.
I would have it understood that the invention comprehends and includes all such variations and modifications in the details of construction as may be resorted to without departing from the terms and scope of the following claims.
The loop may be covored-if desiredwith any suitable material.
Having fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A train-order delivering: device, comprising a ring or loop, a spring arm pivotally secured thereto, and a handle to which said arm is detachably secured.
A train-order delivering device, comprising a ring or loop. a spring arm pivotally secured thereto, and a handle consisting of a body portion, a pivoted jaw, and a spring interposed between said body portion and jaw.
3. A train-order delivering device, comprising a ring or loop, a spring arm pivotally secured thereto, and a handle consisting of a body-portion and a spring-controlled jaw, said body portion and jaw being recessed to provide a seat for said spring arm.
4. A train order delivering device, comprising a ring or loop of wire, a spring arm pivotally secured thereto, and bent to form a loop, a two-part handle formed with a sent to receive the loop 0t said arm, and a spring interposed between the parts of said handle.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT D. KNAII.
