Description

PATENTED OCT. 15, 1907.
0. T. LUCAS.
DOOR STOP.
APPLIUATION IILEI) AUG. 20. 1006.

W1 TNESSES v I ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DOOR-STOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1907.,
Application filed August 20,1906. Serial No. 331.366.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER T. Lucas, a citizen of the United States, residing at N eodesha, in the county of Wilson and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Door-Stop, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stops such as are intended to prevent the annoyance caused by the sound and jar of a slamming door or window.
The objects of the invention are to improve and simplify the construction of such door and window stops; furthermore, to increase their efliciency in operation and to decrease the expense attending their manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of the following claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacriiicing any of its advantages.
1n the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification:l*igure l is a perspective view showing a door equipped with a door stop constructed in accordance with the invention; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through a portion of the door frame.
Like reference numerals indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
The reference numeral 1 indicates a portion of a door frame which is formed with a recess 2 having in the rear ed ge thereof a longitudinally extending groove 3. The recess 2 extends across the top of the door frame, as well as down the sides thereof (but not across the bottom) so as to be in position to receive the door stop and hold the same in its proper place.
The door stop preferably consists of a base plate 4 which is fitted llush into the recess 2 and is provided along its rear edge with a rib 5 adapted to fit into the groove 3 so as to assist in holding the base plate 4 securely within the recess 2. Projecting outwardly from the rear edge of the base plate4 is an integral backing strip 6 which is formed with an inclined or beveled rear edge 7 and a forwardly extending integral flange 8 located at the outer end thereof. Fitted against the base plate 4 with its rear edge resting against-the backing strip 6 beneath the flange 8, is a resilient member 9 which is formed preferably of rubber or equivalent material.
The resilient member 9 preferably is secured in position upon the base plate by means of nails, screws, or equivalent devices 10, which also serve to hold the forward portion of said base plate 4 securely within the recess 2.
As previously intimated, the door stop, consisting of the base plate 4, backing strip 6 and resilient member 9, preferably extends around at least three sides of the door frame, and in some cases said stop, may be extend ed around all four sides of the frame so as to be in position to be engaged by the door when in closed position, thus constituting a strong, simple, durable, inexpensive and thoroughly efficient door stop which is adapted not only to act as a weather strip for excluding air or drafts, but also to absorb any shock or noise caused by the sudden slamming of a door.
it will be understood that whenever desired the improved stop can be used as a weather strip for windows and the like.
What is claimed is:
The combination of a door or window frame formed with a recess having a groove in its rear wall, a stop comprising; a base plate having a rib along its rear edge to engage said groove, an integral backing strip extending outwardly from the rear edge of the base plate and havingan inclined buck and a forwardly extending flange at its outer end, and a -resillent member resting against said base plate and backing strip and fitting under said flange, and l'nslening means passing through said resilient mem her and base plate into the door or window frame.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto ailixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
OLI'VER T. LUCAS.
Witnesses:
