Description
G. W. BELL.
DOOR WEATHER STRIP.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 4, 1908.
Patented Mar. 15, 1910.
UNiTED %TAT% PATENT QFFKQEQ CHARLES W. BELL, OF VALPARAISO, INDIANA.
DOOR WEATHER-STRIP.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, CHARLns WV. BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Valparaiso, county of Porter, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Weather-Strips, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in door weather-strips, and has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character adapted for use on all doors which are exposed to the weather.
A further object of my invention is to provide a yieldable or resilient element in the device adapted to form a seal to prevent air draft, and to serve as a door-stop.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view, my invention consists in a metallic tongue secured adjacent the free vertical and top edges of a door, and a metallic member secured to the door casing having a groove adapted to receive said tongue.
My invention further consists in a packing of felt or other yieldable material inserted in the groove portion of the weatherstrip to serve as a secure closure or seal, and to reduce the noise incident to the closing of a door. And my invention further consists in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of a portion of one member of my improved weather-strip, Fig. 2 is a transverse horizontal section, Figs. 3 and t are detail elevations, and Fig. 5 is a perspective View.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 indicates a metallic strip substantially T-shaped in cross-section and comprising the base flanges 1 and a tongue 2 integral therewith. The member 1 is secured to the door 8 adjacent its free vertical and top edges by means of nails or screws 9, the strip being mitered as at 10 and adapted when the door is closed to engage a member 3 on the door casing or Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mar. 15, 31910. Application filed November 4, 1908.
Serial No. 461,095.
jamb. The member 3 is preferably metallic and comprises a body portion a which is substantially U-shaped in cross-section, an attaching flange 7 which is disposed sub stantially perpendicularly to said U-shaped portion and an obliquely disposed portion 5 folded back over said U-shaped portion and extending from the outer edge thereof to engage the door jamb when applied to the casing. The member 3 is secured to the door casing 11 and is coextensive with the strip 1, the U-shaped portion 4 of said member being adapted to register with the tongue 2 of said strip. The packing 12 of felt or other yieldable material is secured in the U-shaped portion 4 and the tongue 2 is adapted to seat on same forming an absolutely tight joint when the door is closed. Rubber may be used instead of felt if it is desired to make a door-stop having a slightly better cushioning property than felt.
The advantages of my improved device are obvious, its more prominent features being a simple and efficient draft preventive and door-stop silent and automatic in its operation.
While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my device, I do not wish to be limited thereto, as there might be changes made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a device of the class described, a metallic strip comprising a U-shaped body portion an attaching strip at substantially right angles thereto and an obliquely disposed portion extending from the opposite edge of said body portion and folded back over the same, in combination with a coacting member having a tongue adapted to be received within said body portion, substantially as described.
2. A door and door jamb in combination with a metallic strip secured to said jamb and comprising a U-shaped body portion, an attaching flange at substantially right angles thereto and an obliquely disposed portion extending from the outer edge of said U-shaped portion and folded back over the same to engage the face of the jamb and name to this specification in the presence adstrip secured to said door having a tongue of two subscribing Witnesses. a apted to enter saic U-sha e portion when the door is closed and a sesilient packing CHARLES BELL .5 strip in the bottom of said U-shaped por- Witnesses:
tion, substantially as described. L. S. HIGBY,
In testimony whereof I have signed my M. A. GREGORY.
