United States Patent 3,271,063 DOOR GUARD Edd W. Garrett, 4350 S. Prairie Ave., Chicago, Ill. Filed Apr. 29, 1964, Ser. No. 363,506 1 Claim. (Cl. 292346) This invention relates to building construction, and more particularly to the doors of a building to be given the maximum of protection against forced entry by burglars and other unauthorized persons.
Although many practical devices are available to builders and the like for the prevention of forced entry into buildings, these devices are nearly always adapted to windows, or else are some form of locks or chains for door rather than some form of structural element that will prevent one from jimmying the door open.
It is therefore the principal object of this invention to provide a door guard in the form of a pair of structural strips one of which is mounted on the vertical edge of the door and the other on its door frame in such a way as to prevent anyone from jimmying the door open.
Another object of this invention is to provide a door guard that will not detract from the beauty of the door and its frame.
Another object of this invention is to provide a door guard than can be mounted on any door and frame regardless of its location, size, and/or material.
Another object of this invention is to provide a door guard that will not interfere with the normal opening and closing of the door.
Another object of this invention is to provide a door guard that is manufactured from but two mating strips of material that can be secured to the door and its frame by a plurality of screws by even the most inexperienced person.
Still another one of the many objects of this unique invention is to provide a door guard that can be secured to any existing door and frame in a minimum of time without the necessity of making alterations to either the door or its frame.
The invention will best be understood by reference to the following description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing of one specific embodiment thereof, while its scope will be pointed out more particularly in the appended claim.
In the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a pictorial view of that part of this invention that is secured to the door.
FIGURE 2 is a pictorial view of that part of this invention that is secured to a door frame.
FIGURE 3 is a pictorial view of a typical interior door partly open and with this invention secured both to the door and its frame.
FIGURE 4 is a pictorial view similar to that of FIG- URE 3 but with the door closed.
FIGURE 5 is a sectional view of this invention taken along line 55 of FIGURE 4 and viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Referring to the accompany drawing and to the embodiment of that form of the invention selected for illustration, there is herein shown a structural strip that consists of a fiat elongated strip 11 having one edge 12 that, when viewed from the end, is curved into a channel of the configuration of a letter U having an outwardly extending leg 13, the outwardly extending leg terminating in an edge which is in substantially the same plane as the elongated strip. The aforesaid flat elongated strip 11 is provided with a horizontally disposed elongated opening 14 in the upper end 15 while an alike horizontally disposed elongated opening having the same reference number 14 on the drawing is located in the lower 3,271,063 Patented Sept. 6, 1966 end 16 of the same aforesaid flat elongated strip which is also provided with a plurality of equally spaced an vertically disposed circular openings 17 between the two just mentioned elongated openings 14. Screws 18 are first placed through the two elongated openings 14 when the aforesaid structural strip 10 is secured to the side of the door 19, thereby permitting lateral adjustment of the structural strip on the door. When this has been satisfactorily done, other screws are placed through the plurality of openings 17 thereby firmly fixing the same structural strip in place on the door. The heads of all the screws 18 contain special recesses therein adapted to receive the end of a special screwdriver to be used for the installation of this invention on a door and its frame. The purpose of this is to prevent any unauthorized person from taking an ordinary screwdriver and removing this door guard from the door and its frame.
A second structural strip 20 has a fiat elongated metal strip 21 in which are located both elongated and circular openings that are identical to the ones to be found in the aforesaid structural strip 10 for the same type of structural strip securement screws. Both the openings and the screws in this second structural strip 20 are characterized by the same reference numerals as are those previously given herein for the aforementioned structural strip 10. Returning now to the structural strip 20. one edge of the aforesaid flat elongated metal strip 21 of the structural strip is formed at a right angle thereto into a curved channel portion 22 that is the shape of a quadrant of a hollow cylinder and is adapted to receive the U-shaped portion of structural strip 10 when the same has been installed on the door 19 when the door is shut is shown in FIGURE 5. The just mentioned structural strip 20 is secured to the door jam 23 by the screws 18 as is clearly shown in FIGURE 5 of the drawing.
From the above description of this invention when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, one can see at a glance that when this unique door guard. which is made from any desired metal such as steel or aluminum, has been secured in place that no one can possibly jimmy the door open by placing a screwdriver between the edge of the door 19 and its jamb 23, thereby forcing the door open.
Attention is directed to the fact that the structural strip 10 is so mounted on the side of the door 19 that the edge 24 of the outwardly extending leg 13 of the aforesaid structural strip 10 does not extend out beyond the edge 25 of the aforesaid door 19. When the door 19 is shut. the external surface of the U-shaped portion of the aforesaid structural strip 10 will normally nest within the internal surface of the curved portion of structural strip 20 of this invention. These two points of assembly of this invention are best illustrated in FIGURE 5 of the accompanying drawing.
While I have shown and described a simple exemplification of my invention minutely as to detail, it is to be understood that I may vary the structural features within the scope of the claim.
I claim:
A door guard of the character described, comprising a first elongated flat metal strip, an elongated U-shaped channel having one edge terminating in one edge of the metal strip and the other edge in the same plane as the metal strip, a second elongated, fiat metal strip, a second elongated metal channel which is substantially a quadrant of a hollow cylinder, the second channel having one edge terminating in one edge of said second elongated strip and the other edge terminating in a plane at right angles to the plane of said second metal strip, the metal strips having elongated transverse openings near each end thereof and spaced circular openings between References Cited by the Examiner UNITED STATES PATENTS 1/1896 Mannstaedt 10974 Bell 2069 Barry 292346 Mora 292346 Kamrnerer 2069 Kitzelman 2071 Hare 2069 HARRISON R.
