Description

b UNITED STATES PATENT'FIGE,
CLARK s. ooMsTooK, or BILOOMFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
l LOOP.
` specification of Letters Patent...
ratqntea oct. 15, 19o?.
Application iilerl Jnuary 17, 1907. Serial N11-352,'1v3-9.
To all 'whom it may concern: v i
Be it known that I, CLARK S. Cous'roex, a. citizen of the' United States, and a resident of Bloomfield, in the county of Essex a'nd State oi New Jersey, have made and invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loops, of which the following 1s aspecication.
My invention relates to an improvement in wire loops, such for instance as those employed on the ends of Suspenders, shoulder straps, on overalls, garters, etc.,
and adapted to engage-with a button or stud secured to the article or garment.
The object of the invention is to provide a loop made of a single piece oi wire, easily and readily bent, -and completely finished by an automatic wire bending machine, whereby the time, labor and cost of assem; bling two or more pieces or parts, such as is now neces- 'sary in case of those loops' ordinarily used, maybe saved.
'A further object of the invention is to so construct the loop that lit may be employed with buttons orstuds formed with different size hubs, and with no danger 0f `becoming accidentally disengaged therefrom when inuse,.:1nd with these and other ends in view, consists of a loopconstructed of a single piece of wire bent to iorm an upper cross bar for attachment to theaend oi the strap, suspender or garter, two depen'dilng converging arms,- one being bent to form a lower rigid loop foi the reception and retention of the button org stud, said lower loop having its free endl loosely engagingthe Wer free end of the other arm, as hereinafter described and set out in the claims. v
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of m'y` improved loop, showing the same attached t0 the end of a suspender `or strap, 'and in en- ,gag'ement with a button or'stud.- Fig; 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1'. Fig; 3 is a view infront elevation of the loop detachedfrom the stmp.
Fig. 4 is a similarview of a. modiiition. l
Referring'to the drawings, A represents the end of a strap, lsuspender or garter, and lia part of any garment with which the hmp'may he empldyed and to which is secured the button or stud C. The loop is Iliade of a single piece of wire, and in order to permit nf its attachment to the strap A, it is formed with the'cross bar D, ironione end o'f which latter depends the arm E,
having the free outwardly lient ond I".
i Frein the opposite end oi the har D depends the arm G, the two arms ll-G con-verging to form the restricted throat 1l througlrwhich must pass the hub of the button onstud C, and which restriction prevents'the loop from becoming accidentally disengaged from the -buttpn l when in use. The lower end of thearm is bentout;
wardly as at a then downwardlyformingthe retaining loop l, then upwdrdly, and -it'its extreme end the eye K, through which latter extends the free `horizontal end F ofthe arm E, as shown in Figs. l, 3 and- 4.
. When in its normal position, the end F of the arinE p rojects suici'ently far through the eye .IK to prevent disengagement therefrom, and when the button or stud -passes between'the arms E--G, accidental disengagement'is impossible, es thejarms are forced outwardly and the end F stillfurther projected through the eye K.
By thus forming and locking the free ends of the wire,
it is possible to completely form the loop at one operation of the automaticmachine (not'shogyn), but if desired, the free end F of the arm Emgtyiiso be bent into the form of an eye as illustrated in Figri. In such instance, however, a second operation-of the ms'- chine becomes necessaryto finish the loop. A -As the button passes through the throat H, the arms are forced outwardlyjpermitting the button to be received and 'retained the lower rigid loop l, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the armsreturning. to their normal positions :is shownin Figs. land 3 and preventing accidental disengagement of the button and loop. By a slight ,upward push'upon the button, it is forced through the throat H and into the upper widened por-v button or studfand may be employed for all purposes for which similar loops are used..
Having fully described'niy invention, what I clnim,Y A
as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
i. .\'ioop ot the character described constructed ot n single piece ot wlre arid'formed with vnn upper cross harA :unl two depending converging nrnis. one of said arms having n ,free end, the other of snid arms being formed into u lower retaining ioup nud having an eye formed at its emi which loosely engager# the free end of snhi` iirsi mentioned arm, substantially as described. l
1.'. A lonp of the charm-ter descriimnonstructeyi of single niece of wire und formed with un upper cross imr anni Iwo depending converging arms. o nc :lrm haring a f rce end. the other arm being formed into n retaining loop l :ind haringl nn eye formed ut its cui which loosel,\"ungnges the free emi of said iirsbmentloned arm, the upper cross:
