BUTTON HOLE DEVIGE FOR SUSPENDERS. I
No. 254,956. Patented 14, 1882.
' HM" "WI! I PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN J. GREELY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS;
BUTTON-HOLE DEVICE FOR SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,956, dated March 14., 1882.
ApplicationfiledAprilS,1880. (Nomodeh) To ail whom. it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN J. GREELY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Button-Hole Device for Suspenders, of which the following is a'full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My device is composed of a short piece ofthe clasp b, in combination with said clasp b,
having not only the parallel tubular portions 12, but also an attaching portion, 3, by which it may be secured to the suspender.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows two views of my device adapted to be connected with a cord, (1, so that the cord can render through the tube on the device. Fig. 2 shows two views of my device with a loop on the clasp 11, through which a webis passed. The web can render through this loop, as is common in suspenders. Fig. 3 is the same as Fig. 2, except that the web is to be sewed to the loop. In Fig. 4 the loop is smaller than in Figs. 2 and 3, so that the device may be connected with the hooks now much used on suspenders. In Fig. 5 the tubul 1r part of the clasp bis arranged ditferently from the tubularpart ot'the clasp in Fig. l, in order that thedevice may be attached to the end of the cord (1, instead of having that end pass entirely through the tube, as in Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a. perspective view en larged for clearness. Fig. 7 is a. cross-section on line w m, Fig. 6. Figs. 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 are plans of the blanks used for the clasps in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
I 5 is desired.
The clasp is constructed from the blanks shown in Figs. 8, 9, 10, 11, and l2,varying according to the form of clasp desired. These blanks are struck from sheetmetal. The parts 1 2 of the blank, which are designed. to encircle and compress the ends of the short cord a, are pressed into a trough shape. At the same time the part 3 of Fig. 12 is also made trough shape when a clasp like the oneshown inFig. If the form shown in Fig. 2 is desired, the part 3 of Fig. 9 is pressed around and made to encircle the metallic attachingloop, and this portion of the clasp is finished. If theform shown in Fig. 1 is desired, thepart 3 of Fig. 8 is pressed into tubular form and made ready for the insertion of the cord 61. Theattaching parts of the forms shown in Figs. 3 and 4 are finished when the blanks, Figs. 10 and 11, are struck from the sheet metal. The ends of the short cord are now laidin the trough-shaped parts 1 and 2, and these parts are forced to encircle and compress the ends of the cord, and the teeth which are struck up when the blank is formed arefirmly embedded in the ends of the cord, which by the compression of the parts 1 and 2 by the action of the teeth are held tirmly in position.
What I claim as my invention is- The improved button-hole device above described, eomposed ot' the short cord a, having its ends brought together and each end encircled and compressed by the tubular portions 1 2 ofcclasp b, the clasp I) being formed of one piece of metal with the two tubular portionsl2 to receive and compress the ends of cord at, as described, and also with the attaching portion 3, by which the device is attached to the suspender, as set forth.
