Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK S. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mops, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in that type of mops which com prise a handle having a frame pivotally mounted upon one end thereof, the said frame being adapted to carry the swab or mop cloth.

The object of the invention is to provide a mop of this character which is very efficient in operation and in which the swab carrying frame is peculiarly designed so as to be very easily and cheaply manufacturcd.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is -to be had tothe following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved mop; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a top plan view, a portion of the handle being broken away; and, Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the frame to which the mop cloth is attached.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The numeral 1 designates the handle of the mop which is provided at its lower end with a socket or ferrule 2. Two ears 3 project outwardly from diametrically opposite sides of the socket and are provided with apertures through which the handle extensions 4 are passed. These handle extensions 4 are in the nature of two approximately parallel mem bers having their upper ends connected by a cross bar 5 which passes through a transverse opening in the handle 1, while their opposite ends are formed with the laterally extending members 6 upon which the frame 7 is mounted.

Particular attention is called to the specific construction of the frame 7 since it is peculiarly designed so as to be readily formed from a single piece of wire or similar material. The frame comprises a forward cross piece 8 and a rear cross piece 9 having their extremities connected by side bars 10. These side bars 10 are bent inwardly at a point adjacent the forward cross bar 8 so as to form the inwardly extending members 11 which are spaced from and approximately parallel to the cross bar 8, and the rearwardly extending side pieces 12 which diverge outwardly toward the rear cross bar 9. When formed of a single piece of wire, as shown in the drawings, the ends of the same are connected by means of a sleeve 13. The rcarwardly extending portions 12 of the side pieces 10 are looped or coiled at an intermediate point to form the eyes 21 through which the outwardly bent ends of thehandle extensions 4 are passed. Should it be desired to economize space when packing or storing the device, the frame 7 may be readily detached from the handle extensions 4 by forcing the sides of the frame in opposite directions until the eyes 21 are disengaged from the lugs 6.

A bracket 14 projects rearwardly and upwardly from the socket 2 and is provided at its extremity with a bearing 15 within which the rod or shaft 16 is mounted. The lower end of the shaft 16 is bent to form the hook 17, while the upper end is provided with the handle 18. The swab or mop cloth 19 passes through the loop 20 formed in the frame 7 by the forward cross bar 8 and the inwardly extending members ll of the side pieces, and is also attached to the hook 18. When the mop is in use, the frame 7 is disposed at an angle to the handle extensions 4 and the rear cross bar 9 bears against the mop cloth 19 to hold it in a distended or stretched position. -When it is desired to wring the mop cloth, the frame '7 is swung so as to throw the rear cross bar 9 against the handle extensions 4 and the handle 18 upon the shaft 16 then turned.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

As a new article of manufacture, a mop comprising a handle, spaced extensions projecting from an end of the handle and provided with laterally projecting portions, and a mo) carrying frame formed of a single length of wire and comprising front and rear approximately parallel end portions having their corresponding extremities connected by integral side pieces, the latter being pressed in wardly at a point adjacent the front cross bar so as to lie approximately parallel to said cross bar and form a loop in conjunction therewith for the reception of the mop cloth, while the remaining portion of the side pieces diverge outwardly toward the rear cross bar, and are coiled .at intermediate points to form bearings designed to he dctachably engaged by the before mentioned lateral projections upon the handle extensions.
