To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LOUIS 0. Boom, a citizen of the United States, residing at IVinslow, in the State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Mop Heads and \Vringers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relatesto a new and useful improvement in combined mop head and wringer, and has for its object to provide a simple but effective device of this description by which the water may be wrung fro-m the mop-cloth and the cloth unwound and returned to its former condition without the necessity of the operator touching the cloth by hand.

Nith these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numeral to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of my mop. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3, is a face view of the cross head, and Fig. 4:, is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.

In carrying out my invention as here embodied, 1 represents a rectangular frame composed of the head 2, and side bars 3, said side bars being secured to the shoulders 16, mounted on each end of the head 2, and joined together at the other end by means of the loop 4, to which one end of the mopcloth 5 is secured. The head 2, has formed with or secured to it a sleeve 6, which forms a bearing for the reciprocating or sliding tube 7. This tube 7 has secured to it, upon its outer end, the cross head 8, which has holes 9 formed in each end thereof through which the side bars 3 pass.

10 is a shank composed of two wires twisted together, and this shank passes through the tube 7, and the twisted portion is threaded through the opening 11 in the cross head 8, so that if the cross head 8 is held stationary and the shank forced outward it will cause the shank 10 to turn upon its axis. is secured. The other end of the shank 10 is swiveled at the point 13 in the plunger 14: and to this plunger is secured the handle 15 of the mop, said handle being secured to the plunger. It will now be seen that if the tube 7, is slid through the sleeve 6, the shank 10 will travel with the same, and the two loops 4: and 12 will be brought in close contact with one another which will bring the mop-cloth in position to be used for mopping as shown, but when it is desired to wring the cloth, the tube 7 is pulled back until the cross head 8 comes in contact with the head 2, then if the cross head 8 and 'tube 7 are held stationary and the handle pushed it will cause the shank 10 to travel outward from the tube, and the twisted por tion of the shank being threaded through the cross head 8 will cause the shank and loop 12 to turn, which will twist the cloth 5 and wring the water from the same, then by pulling outward upon the handle the cloth will be untwisted and returned to its fiatcondition, when the tube 7 can be again pushed forward and the mop-cloth will be in an operative condition.

For the purpose of forming a bearing for the shank 10 at a point near the loop 12, I provide a plate 17 in which the shank 10 is journaled, and this plate has holes 18 formed in each end thereof through which pass the side bars 3 upon which the plate is guided, and thereby holds the loop centrally between the bars. The tube 7 is held by one hand while the handle is pushed outward, so that the cross head 8 is brought in contact with the head 2, while the mop-cloth is being wrung.

Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction here shown, as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is-

1. In a combined mop head and wringer, a rectangular framecomposed of a head, side bars secured to each end of said head, a loop joining the outer ends of the side bars together, one end of the mop cloth being secured to this loop, a sleeve formed with the head, a tube adapted to slide within said sleeve, a cross head secured to the outer end of said tube, said cross head being guided by the side bars, a twisted shank extending through the tube, said shank being threaded through the cross head, a loop formed upon the outer end of the shank to which the outer end of the mop cloth is secured, a plunger adapted to reciprocate within the tube, the outer end of the twisted shank swiveled in the plunger, and a handle secured to the plunger, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In a mop of the character described, a rectangular frame, a loop formed on the outer end of said frame to which one end of the mop cloth is secured, a head at the opposite end of the rectangular frame, a tube adapted to slide through a bearing formed through the middle of the head, a cross head secured to the outer end of the tube and guided by the rectangular frame, a loop to which the other end of the mop cloth is secured, a twisted shank to which the loop is secured, said shank being threaded through the cross head and passing through the tube, a plunger adapted to slide within the tube to which the other end of the shank is swiveled, a handle secured to the plunger, and a bearing for the shank adapted to travel with the same and be guided upon the rectangular frame.
