THIRD SEAT FOR VEHICLES.
Application filed September 21,1906.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1907.
fierial No. 335,618.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TOM BOND, Sn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Third Seat for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to third or auxiliary seats for vehicles and has for an object to provide a device of the class embodying new and improved features of simplicity, convenience, utility, durability and sightlincss.
A further object of the invention is to provide an auxiliary seat having folding hooks for engagement with the toe rail, folding end pieces and folding legs to rest upon the flooring and support the side of the seat opposite the hooks and which may be stored in small space in the vehicle or elsewhere.
With these and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form proportions, size and minor details may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved auxiliary seat applied to a vehicle. Fig. 2 is a view of the improved seat in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on lines 3-3 of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the folding hook for securing the seat upon the vehicle.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
In its preferred embodiment, the improved auxiliary seat forming the subject matter of this application comprises the seat board 10 of any approved width and of a length to correspond with the vehicle with which it is to be used and having the corners on one side at each end cut out to form the recesses 11 to accommodate the braces 12, by which the dash 13 is secured. Upon the under side of the board 10 are secured the hinge members 14 within which are pivoted the folding hooks 15 proportioned for engaging the toe rail 16.
Legs 17 are hinged to the under-side of the board 10 adjacent the outer edges thereof as shown at 18 and are designed to bear upon the flooring 19 and support said edges of the board. To maintain the legs in a folded position, the straps 20 are secured to the under side of the seat and slitted for detachable engagement upon the headed fastenings 21. From the under side of the seat is suspended the strap 22 having a buckle 23 or other approved fastening.
At the ends of the upper side of the seat are secured the hinge blocks 24 to which are pivoted the folding end pieces 25 having a curved portion 26 so formed as to be folded over and upon any form of cushion or upholstering with which the seat and end pieces may be provided.
From the foregoing description it will be readily understood that the hooks, legs and end pieces all fold into the smallest possible space whereby the seat may occupy but the minimum storage room when not in use.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. The combination with a vehicle having a dash and toe rail of an auxiliary seat having recesses for the accommodation of the dash securing means, folding hooks for engagement with the toe rail and folding legs to support the seat.
2. lhe combination with a vehicle having a dash and toe rail, of an auxiliary seat having recesses for the accommodation of the clash securing means, folding end pieces, folding hooks for engagement with the toe rail and folding legs to support the seat.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
TOM BOND, SR.
