This invention has for its object to provide' a ,verysimple and economical construction of rotatable tops for that class of powder receptacles wherein there is a lateral discharge opening.
The neck of thereceptacle is made with a side dischargeV opening and-with a groove opposite the discharge opening, said groove having depressions at its opposite ends, and upon this neck is'mounted arotatable outside shell, having an opening to correspond with the opening in the neck, and also having a spring tongue nearly opposite the said opening and provided with a lug which engages the' groove and thereby subserves the double purpose of connecting the outside shell with the neck without the aid of any other-,fastening and for holding the outside shell with its opening in register with the opening in the neck and also holding it toclose theopening and to draw the shell tight against the neck, so as to insure against leakage. z
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, in the severalgures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a rear elevation look- Fig; 2 is a Ahorizontal section a sideelevat'ion of the neck withput the cap. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the top with theshell turned about midway of the groove in the neck. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of the top with the shell turned to open `for discharge. The neck'l -is made as an inverted cup and secured to the breast 2 in any suitable manner. This neck is provided with a lateral opening 3 for discharging the contents of the can or recepta'cle, and it is also made with an.inwardly proj ecting'groove 4 arranged opposite to the opening 3, and this groove has the depressions v5 and 6 at its end. lThe shell 7 is also made in the form of an inverted cup of any ornamental configuration excepting `that it is designed to fitcomparatively snugly about the vertical wall of the neck l, and close to the closed top of said neck. The shell is made with an opening 8 complemental to the opening Sandthe two openings are designed to be brought into alinement by rotation of the shell around the neck l as a journal. Nearly opposite its opening 8 the neck is provided with a tongue 9 preferably somewhat of. the outline oi a horseshoe of the letter U. This tongue is severed from specification 5f-Letten Patent. Application ma Dewinter 26,1906. suini No. 349,461.
Patented. July 9, 1 907.
the metal of the shell in three ldirections and remains intact with the metal of the shell at one end, as for er;- ample, 'its upper end. The other or lower end of the tongue-is provided with a lug I0 which' engages the groove 4 in the neck'and is the only means by which the shell-is connected to the neck, thus obviating the necessity of employing the usual interlocking beads and the likefand resulting in a very considerable economy in the construction, and also gaining for the construction the. advantage of ability to discard a damaged or imperfectneck or shell without discarding both, because theshell may be pulled off from the neck without damage to itself and without damage to 'the neck.
The tongue is a relativelystiff spring, and when the shell is rotated so as to bring the'openings 3 and'81out of register, as in Fig. 2, then the lug l0 springs down into the depression` 6 at the end of groove 4 and holds the shell in that position until it is forcibly released. Also when these openings 3 and 8 are brought into register, as indicated in Fig. 3, this same lug springs forcibly down into the depressionv 5 and with equal force holds the neck in the closed position'. 'Moreoveig at all times this tongue, by virtue of its springiness and its location opposite the opening in the neck, serves to bring the shell into suchl intimate contact with the neck as'to prevent to a very large degree,- if not wholly,
the leakage of the contents of the receptacle.
The spring tongue and its lugare so related to th groove and its end depressions that said spring-tongue.
is always under more or less tension'and tension' sufcient to keep the shell in intimate contact with the neck, the depth of the groove and its depressions and the height of the lug beingso proportioned vthat spring tension will be insured. As indicated in Fig. 5, these.
proportions are such vthat the springtongue stands ofi from the vertical plane of the wall of the shell a slight distance when the lug is traveling in the body of the groove.
The invention herein is a species oithe broad invention common-to this and another case of mine Serial No. 349,492 of even date.
What I claim is:-
1. A top for powder receptacles, comprising a closed neck having a lateral discharge opening and afgroove opposite said discharge opening, and an outside shell applied to said neck and provided with a registering opening, and a spring tongue cut longitudinally from its side wall. on
the other side from its opening and having alug engaging the groove in the neck and thereby connecting the shell and neck without extraneous fastenings.
. 2. A top for powder receptacles, comprising a closed neck having a lateral discharge opening vand a-groove opposlte said discharge opening, provided with end depressions, an outside shell applied to said neck and provided with a registering opening, and a spring tongue cut.iongitudlnally from its side wall on the other side from its opening and having a lug engaging the groove at all times, thereby electing the union or the neck and shell without Correction' ine-Letters Patent No. 859.897.
extraneous fastenings and drawing the shell into such intimate contact with the neck as to make it dust-tight when closed.
3. A top for powder receptacles, comprising n closed neck having"r n lateral discharge opening and a groove opposlte s'ald discharge opening provided with endv depressions, an outside shell applied to said neck and provided with a registeringopenlng und a' spring tongue cut longitudinally from its side wall on the other side from its opening, :1nd having a lug engaging the groove at all times and thereby eiecting the union of the neck andshell with- Signed and sealed [sEALj out extraneous fastenings and drawing the shell into such intimate contact with the neck ns to make it dust-tighL when closed and movable into engagement with the depressions in the ends of the groove, respectively to retain the shell in its open und its closed positions.
