WILLIAM WILSON, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
BOTTLE-CLOSURE.
Application filed January 18, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, W'JLLIAM: Wilson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain .ncw and useful Improvements in Bottle- (llosures, of which the following is a speci tication.
This invention relates to bottles, and the principal object of the invention is to pro vide a bottle having an improved type of closure, which closure serves the purpose of preventing the bottle from being refilled without the refilling being indicated.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the closure that a dissolvable ma terial may he placed in the closure. This substance is dissolved when attempting to refill the bottle and will spoil the liquid being forced into the bottle.
ith these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements ot' parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
in the acconqmnying drawing:-l+igure 1 is a side elevation of a bottle provided with the improved type of closure. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View through the closure and the upper portion of the neck of the bottle. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the bottle neck.
The bottle 10 which is shown in Fig. 1 may be of any size and shape desired and ot any material, but it is preferably formed of glass. This bottle is provided with a neck 11 having the bead 12 at. its upper edge and is provided intermediate its height with a block 13 having openings l t and 15, formed in the side portions thereof. This block is provided with the optmings 1t and 15 to permit the liquid in the bottle to [low out through one of the ('lpenings while the air passes into the bottle through the remaining one. The block is also provided with a centrally threaded opening it) through which a threaded stem 17 passes to adjustably connect the closure with the block. A pin .18 is passed through the inner end portion of the stem 17 to prevent the stem from being entirely removed from the bottle.
A disk 19 of any suitable material is i)laced upon the outer end portion oi the stem 17 and is held in place by having a head .20 termed upon the outer end portion Specification of Letters Patent.

of the stem. It should be noted that the portion of the stem which passes through the disk is reduced, thus forming a shoulder which prevents longitudinal movement of the disk in one direction. The outer edge portion of the disk is reduced to 'torm a seat in which a gasket 21 of cork or other suit able material is placed, and From an inspection of Fig. 2 it will be seen that when the stem 17 is rotated in the proper direction that this gasket will be brought into engagement with the upper edge ot the bottle, thus causing the bottle to be tightly sealed. A. cap 22 incloses the disk 19 and is crimpcd intermediate its height to form an inwardly extending head 93 which engages the edge of the disk, thus preventing the cap from working loose. The upper portion of this cap is spaced from the disk to provide a housing 24- in which a dissolvable substance 95 may be placed. This substance is ot such a character that when dissolved by the liquid with which it is attermited to till the bottle it:- will cause the liquid to be discolored or give a disagreeable taste. Openings 26 are provided to permit the liquid to [low into the mmpartment 2-1 and dis solve the substance 25.
\Vhen in use the bottle 10 is first filled with any desired liquid such as wine, and the block 13 through which the stem 17 passes is then inserted in the neck and held in place by any suitable means such as 't'using. The cap is then turned to cause the stem to pass into the neck and bring the gasket 21 into engagement with the top ot the bottle neck. This will cause the bottle to be tightly sealed and will prevent the contents of the bottle from being wasted and tron; losing its strength. "When it is desired to remove the liquid from the bottle the closure is turned to assume the position shown in Fig. 2 and the liquid can llow out through one ot the openings 1-lor 15 and through the space between the bead l2 and the cap 22. After this bottle has been emptied the only way that it can be refilled is to place the empty bottle in a receptacle tilled with wine or other liquid and to allow the liquid to flow into the bottle, and thus drive the air out. \Vhen the bottle is being tilled in this manner the liquid will also tiow through the openings 2t? into the compartment 2] where it will dissolve the sulr stance 25 and cause it to spoil the liquid in the receptacle into which the bottle has been bead engaging the edges of said disk and having its outer end portions positioned in spaced relation to said disk to form a compartment and being also provided with openings communicating with said compartment, and a dissolvable substance in said compartment.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 'in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM WILSON.
